the year of cow I removed the television set from my working room where I sleep most of nights while reading or writing even though I always had the television running without sounds as architects have radio running while they design structures I find more reading time without television but I may get a bigger set when we get a HDTV set in the living room We have been shopping around for a LCD set of Samsung since our community started digital cable last year since all American television starts digital format in February I also became a subscriber of The Time magazine It was a gift from a friend and I received my first volume dated January 12 The Time was the main vehicle of an extracurricular club SIS Student Intellectual Society of Korea University in 1957 when I was invited to be a member The club met Thursday afternoon after the Asian publication of the magazine arrived in the campus bookstore on Wednesday and a number of members most of them were juniors and seniors were assigned to a story to lead the discussion on the following week I was assigned to a story about American political activities and I had really struggled to understand the meaning of the article but I was recognized as a young student of American journalism as I was working for the campus newspaper at that time I had been a regular subscriber and reader of the publication for a long time before my retirement I was shocked to find that the magazine had only thin 56 pages that look like a newsletter without having many pages of advertisements that I find in Korean magazines As one of key articles by James Poniewozik is Mediapocalypse Now that tells how hard it is for old media business which was hammered in 2008 The Tribune Company which owns The Chicago Tribune and The L A Times declared bankruptcy and a large number of journalists lost their works I wonder how Korean newspapers would survive in this rapidly changing journalism I also enjoyed reading a cynical essay of Michael Kinsley on the failure of the Bush presidency on the last page and a book review of Reborn Journals and Notebooks 1947 1963 by Susan Sontag 16 January 1933 28 December 2004 was an American author filmmaker philosopher literary theorist and political activist Richard Lacayo s review was so good that I ordered a copy I also received a copy of book a collection of 100 essays of JH Park 박산로에서 홍진 세월을 살며 Park is a high school classmate of mine who had a successful career as a reporter teacher CEO and lecturer but he is an outstanding writer who has been keeping his diaries and journals for a long time I would not dare to translate the subject of this book but I describe it as I live my life of hope and despair that become a dream with tiny little dusts in a Censer of mountain and cloud that was used in the Tang dynasty of China about a thousand years ago The subject is heavily historical religious and philosophical in a way to search for the meaning of our life According to Park our life is not much more than a dream in which we struggle so much to get more in greed and our world we live is not much more than a censor compared to the universe Park is a Catholic but he has a deep knowledge of Buddhism in his writing It is no secret that I am not a baptized Christian even though I go to churches with my wife a few times in a year I have inclined to be a believer in Buddhism more than Christianity but I have no intention of getting involved with any activities with Buddhists I just like the meditation alone part of the religion that helps me a great deal to go through with uncertain part of my life I just hate any religious ritual that bores me a lot but I can sit cross legged for more than an hour for my meditation on the subject of nothing The following article Perfect Golf Swing was written by me and was published in the Globe our local newspaper on the Christmas day The perfect golf swing is a myth says Leo Sung Pak a long hitter among our club members All you have to do is to look at the variety of swings by professional golfers on television Still he adds they do have some common elements They all start with good fundamentals grip aim and setup And the swing repeats itself exactly every time Nevertheless a scientist claims to have found the secret to the perfect golf swing and it s not all in the wrists as the popular adage goes The key is knowing at exactly what stage of the swing you should exert the maximum force according to a British researcher Robin Sharp who published his study on line on Nov 5 Based on a golfer s physical dimensions and strengths and using the top of the back swing position Sharp has calculated how to achieve the maximum club head speed for a standard driver upon impact with the ball Bernard Hunt s best swing is used as an example The positions of the shoulders arms grips and club shaft are shown at 10 millisecond intervals The model shows that Hunt s drive distance could have been improved by increasing the shoulder torque quickly to the maximum value and then maintaining it throughout the rest of the swing while initially holding back with his arms and wrists The timing of the switch from holding back to hitting through with the arms is the most critical feature of the swing Generating too much arm speed too soon causes an early release writes Sharp with the club head reaching its maximum speed before it arrives at the ball The optimal strategy consists of hitting first with the shoulders while holding back with arms and wrists and after some delay hitting through with the arms At release the timing of which depends on the combination of shoulder and arm actions employed the wrists should hit through Breaking with conventional thinking his study suggests that the wrists are not as important as the way a golfer uses his or her arms Knowing exactly how long that delay should last is the crucial factor His research also concludes that height is not as advantageous as previously thought with short people able to hit a ball almost as far as their taller competitors if they use the right technique http www surrey ac uk mma news I also wrote a psychological aspect of golf The perfect golf swing was figured out by Robin Sharp of England with his mechanical engineering background but Golf is Not a Game of Perfect as the title of a book Simon and Schuster 1995 by Bob Rotella put it Rotella is the director of sports psychology at the University of Virginia and has been a consultant to many golf organizations including the PGA the LPGA and the senior LPGA On the first tee a golfer must expect only two things of himself to have fun and to focus his mind properly on every shot Rotella says Golfers must learn to love a challenge when they hit a ball into the roughs trees or sand The alternatives anger fear whining and cheating do no good Confidence is crucial to good golf Confidence is simply the aggregate of the thoughts you have yourself It is more important to be decisive than to be correct when preparing to play any golf shot or putt My friend who carries an 18 handicap and is known as a perpetual complainer missed a short putt on the first hole after making an unusual second shot to land on the green whined and screamed all the way to the 18th hole and had another bad round of golf When we were chatting in the lounge after the game the perpetual complainer was advised to read Rotella s book A statistician friend among the foursome also explained the normal distribution of putts When you putt so many times you may make as many difficult putts as you may miss easy putts about 16 percent of the time The complainer should have thought that the first hole was a par 5 for him and should therefore be delighted to have made his par on the hole Another friend suggested he read Zen Golf Mastering the Mental Game Double Day 2002 by Joseph Parent who is a noted PGA instructor and taught Buddhist philosophy and stress reduction methods for more than 25 years Great golf comes from confidence and concentration the ability to stay in the present and block out distraction the Buddhist follower writes Achieving a clear mind is also heart of Buddhist philosophy and practice However he was also advised not to meditate while he plays the game I somehow learnt what I could do best with my physical capability and I have been playing really well for the games During the trip to the Warner I played well enough to win the matches for the both days Seoul Trip We booked our trip to Seoul on March 16 that arrives in Seoul in the night of March 17 with Northwest Air and paid $745 per Another Cow Year 2009 is another cow year that comes after a cycle of 12 years and Young and I get a special celebration since we were born
