Summary: BSS Rangpur Authorities have taken all necessary steps to make successful the special programme for short duration BRRI Dhan 33 variety paddy farming in greater Rangpur to eradicate the century old curse of Monga officials said The steps have been taken as per decisions taken in a meeting titled Evaluation of Expansion of BRRI Dhan 33 Farming During T Aman Season to Eradicate Monga organised by Rangpur Regional Research Station of BRRI at Rangpur Circuit House on last May 16 Agriculture Secretary M Abdul Aziz presided over the meeting attended by DG of BRRI Dr Nur E Elahi Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council Dr Abdur Razzaque DG of the DAE Shamsul Alam and other officials concerned The meeting fixed the target of farming the paddy in 40 000 hectares of land during this T Aman season to create job opportunities for the farm labourers during the peak hour of Monga To make the programme a success upazila and district monitoring and implemen tation committees have been formed and they are continuing their activities in full swing officials told BSS They said distribution of 1 600 tonnes of BRRI Dhan 33 seeds among the farmers is nearing completion by BADC and different partner NGOs and all necessary steps have been taken to ensure timely and smooth supply of fertilizer pesticides and other inputs and supplementary irrigation if needed They said 107 000 hectares of land suitable for farming BRRI Dhan 33 in the area would be brought under early paddy farming by the year 2010 to harvest over five lakh tonnes of paddy in only 115 to 118 days Deputy Director of the DAE Rangpur Kamal Shariful Alam said the farmers would start sowing BRRI DHAN 33 seeds using dry and wet methods of Direct Seeded Rice and Lithao method on June 20 and continue till July 20 next All set for farming BRRI Dhan 33 to fight Monga
