Is persistance the secret to success? I run a small business in my spare time importing goods from around the world and sell them locally. The money I bring in helps fund me while I study. Everything I do is legal and I go through the appropriate lagal steps, but even though I did everything according to the book, my package was held in customs for 2 weeks and they then charged me a large amount of tax and clearance fees. This was because the exchange rate dropped and sent the declared price of the goods above the allowed median. Some of the goods were damaged internally due to transit and now items have been sent back to me by customers. I will just scrape through with savings to pay people back etc. Now for my question... My Dad is around 50 years old, he is very successful and high up in his company and makes almost 200 thousand dollars a year. I do set a reserve because I fear of selling something for .99 or $3, etc. I set a reserve, have several views and watchers, but they bid at the last minute and still sells relatively cheap. Dire help? Success in college? Hi there. I've been wondering this for a long time.. I find myself to be an average student and this fills me with utter frustration. I have some friends in different courses and an example in my very own course of bright students that manage to handle themselves and be brilliant minds when it comes to grades. I'm sick and tired of not being a straight-A student like them! I went to all of the classes in the first semester, took notes of everything, studied like hell every single day on the library and even took out the possibility of having extra curricular activities just for focusing on the work in question. I even tried studying in group or alone to further measure my capacities. My utter frustration is derived from the fact that I struggle to have a miserable positive grade in comparison to the straight-A examples I speak of when they seem to lack the effort I put in everything... After all, what's the secret to success in college? My highest grade (in a scale of 0 to 20) has been a mild 16 and I can't take the pressure anymore when they indirectly taunt me about the fact. What do you think the secret to 'success' is? I'm curious about the perspective of others. When I was very young I was convinced that intelligence trumped everything else. Quite obviously wrong. When I became older I felt like having great people skills was the main focal point of 'successful' people. Now keep in mind I know 'success' is a relative term, so when I use it here I'm referring to the "American dream" or I suppose in my case the "Canadian dream". Doing well financially, having a great job that you enjoy and do well in, and living a relatively happy life. I've come to my own conclusion that financial success is a combination of people skills, direction, hard work and a LOT of persistence/drive. I believe this is why many intelligent people don't fare well economically. They're not used to putting in a lot of effort to do things and therefore don't work as hard as some others. Anyway, just looking for your opinion, past experience, etc.

How do I become less intense at work? I’ve read many places including my company’s manifesto that passion is one of the biggest secrets to success. I am an enthusiastic and very passionate person however I have been told that I sometimes get too intense and it does not bode well for me. Many athletes strive to become the best at what they do. The historic athletes of the last century went above and beyond the others, and thats because of their dedication to the game. Commitment plays an important roll in determining victory, or defeat. It also determines whether or not the person will survive. Serious athletes are committed to their athletic sport because it is their career. These people work hard, and never stop. Often putting their social lives aside and living and breathing the game that they play. Never giving up and always pushing themselves, these people are the ones who will prosper. Training and conditioning the body is all part of the secrete. Athletes must be able to deal with the phisical presures, and beatings that their bodys take. Building lean muscle and learning the moves is half the battle. The other half is the mental training an athlete must complete. Always staying positive, never giving up and beleiving in themselves can determine whether they go home a winner or a looser. Both physical and mental training are part of the winning recipe. Discipline is hard uphill battle. Controlling emotions, and thinking before acting isn't easy. Following a strict diet, and resisting the temptation to eat foods that aren't healthy is all part of the lifestyle. Taking shortcuts isn't the way to go. Using drugs to supreceed will only hurt the person in the long run. Learning to discipline themselves, and go that extra mile, take the long way, and learn from the mistakes one makes will definatly make them a better player.
