And what are you standards of success? last I looked, poverty was cut in half in about 3-4 years of it starting...50 percent reduction... pretty good results... cons often go on and on about how "the poor in the U.S. are like rich people in other nations"... which this certainly wasn't the case much before the war on poverty... I don't think any program will eliminate all poverty, so I think that's an unrealistic standard... but as programs go... this looks like it's done pretty well... thoughts, evidence to the contrary? there are always people becoming poor, and poor people becoming middle class/rich...the "pools" of people are replenished to some degree I would think that these programs are needed to maintain the balance and to keep the status quo... just me...keep the poor pool small gee, you didn't say much about it for it to be one of your favorite topics?

Anyone else having success using standard process brand supplements to treat their bipolar disorder? I recently detoxed off of my psych meds and replaced them with supplements i'm getting from an alternative medicine dr. For the most part the transition to this type of treatment's been effective. I have not noticed any old symptoms of my disorder returning. For the most part I feel stable and I am able to function. I was curious as to if other people have this same or similar results using alternative medicine, as a opposed to a traditional medicine?

How can I be a positive and effective supervisor to someone with Asperger's in a work situation? I was recently hired as a child care manager and, after a very difficult staff hiring process, decided to re-evaluate a very quirky and awkward candidate. Their references were stellar but their interview was woefully inadequate, were they to be held to conventionally rigid interviewing success standards. Having worked with many children on the autism spectrum and being a fan of Michelle Dawson's writings on the subject ( http://www.sentex.net/%7Enexus23/naa_02.html ), I recognized aspects of this individual's behaviour as being characteristic of some form of autism or Asperger's despite the fact that this was not disclosed in the interview. Incidental evidence also came up during our reference/background checks that suggested a history of difficult interpersonal interactions in work-related settings on the part of this person. I did my due dilligence and decided to hire this person. Asperger's or no, their communication style is very different from any I have ever encountered.

Why is recreational drug use frowned upon in our society? I understand that many "recreational drugs" are harmful and that the overwhelming majority of them pose the threat of addiction/dependence, not to mention overdose; however, if people want to risk or even sacrifice their physical and/or mental health in the name of "getting high," isn't it their right to do so? Harmfulness aside, recreational drug use is often thought of as only for "losers" or "junkies." I personally disagree with this, as historically, many visionaries, geniuses, artists, innovators, etc. were drug users. And though it sounds ridiculous (most likely due to the stigma our society attaches to the non-medical use of drugs), it is true. Further yet, drug users are often stereotyped as unsuccessful. But whether or not someone is successful relies entirely on what they are trying to achieve; success, to put it simply, is achieving one's own goal. (Note that, as used in this context, success is NOT reaching another's goal, but one's own.) However, society calls many people unsuccessful simply for not living up to its (sometimes unreasonable) standards. Success is not about achieving someone else's goal for you, but your own goals for yourself. Therefore, drug users, while in most cases deviant, are not necessarily unsuccessful. These are just some thoughts I've had on the subject. As you have probably already assumed due to my avatar, I do use drugs (namely cannabis) recreationally and/or spiritually. This means that by having a positive personality it will attract positive outcomes. Take the book “The Secret” for example; it simply states that if you sustain the right thoughts, words and feelings and by using positive thinking you attract success to yourself. In reality, if someone wants something bad enough they’re going to do everything in their power to create the best outcome. To be a successful athlete, one must be devoted to all areas of making their environment beneficial. This is the key for success to progress naturally and effortlessly for a sport that is so emotionally demanding. Self discipline can empower someone to overcome the greatest obstacles, demolish procrastination and undermine ignorance. Everyone has heard ‘practice makes perfect’, to be a successful athlete life must revolve around this thought. A coach can only push an individual or team so far before they have to decide for their selves whether to use their own drive and ability to work hard with persistence and will power or resort to being lazy and overlook hardwork. How should we define success? I think the yardsticks of success that society measures us by is how happy we are, our success with the opposite sex (being married), and our incomes. But which of these do you think carry more weight? Old bachelors are seen as less successful than old married men. People who win the lottery and win millions have been proven to be less happy than the rest of us in the middle class. People who are self-made millionaires are also about the same level of happiness as us. However, I dont think happiness is the only standard: if a couple is happily married, but are struggling financially and living in poverty, are they successful?

Here in the land of freedom and opportunities, there is one dream that everyone strives for; the American Dream. The American Dream can mean different things to many people. For some it can mean success or freedom, for others, it can mean having lots of money and luxurious things. In today’s society, almost every person hopes for this dream. But is it possible for each and every person to achieve this dream? Some people go to school, get a well-paying job, and are able to make it to the top while the fortunate ones get there on pure luck. Then there are others who have difficulties climbing the economic ladder and remain at the bottom discovering this dream is nothing more than a myth with endless trials and disappointments. While some are struggling to survive in this world today, Americans should appreciate what they have and realize the benefits this country has to offer them; that with hard work, determination, and a good education, anyone can succeed with the right attitude. So what is the American Dream? Essentially it is the idea that anyone can succeed through thrift and hard work, and be potentially happy living successful lives. People were always taught that if they were honest and worked hard enough, they were able to obtain their dreams. However, the American Dream seems to be more difficult to reach nowadays because not everyone is content with what they have. Society is caught up by the media and everything around them and are brainwashed to believe that the American Dream includes big mansions, luxury cars, and expensive possessions. The definition of success has also been changing over the decades and is causing people to desire things that they never would have before. Every individual is given the opportunity to succeed regardless of what they are or where they came from. Although, it is true that a white child raised in an upper-class neighborhood will have greater chances of success then an African-American or Hispanic child who was raised in a poor community, it does not mean that success cannot be obtained. In Ken Hamblin’s “The Black Avenger” he states, “I have never believed – because I was never told – that because of the color of my skin I could never get the fullest measure of opportunity in America.” Chances for success in America are definitely possible if a person is determined enough and put the extra effort in to it. It might take more work and motivation to climb to the top, but if everyone knew the benefits and resources available to them, they would realize that success is very possible. However, not everyone has the same intelligence and skills of these men. Many people require a good education background. It has been traditionally said that a good education leads to success. It is a fact that a person who graduated with a college degree has greater chances of finding a well-paying job than those who do not. The government offers assistance to those interested in a higher education. Government grants, financial aid, and scholarships are just to name a few. Many people are not even aware of the benefits available to them because they are not informed about it or they might not have the tools to research about it. Some may not even feel they are good enough or smart enough to even try. Success in America is not guaranteed, however, neither is it a guaranteed doom of failure. America is known for its diversity of cultures filled with many difference colors and backgrounds. Every individual is given the opportunity to succeed regardless of what they are or where they came from. Although, it is true that a white child raised in an upper-class neighborhood will have greater chances of success then an African-American or Hispanic child who was raised in a poor community, it does not mean that success cannot be obtained. In Ken Hamblin's "The Black Avenger" he states, "I have never believed – because I was never told – that because of the color of my skin I could never get the fullest measure of opportunity in America." Chances for success in America are definitely possible if a person is determined enough and put the extra effort in to it. False incompetence charge!? In its defense for not paying an invoice the MD of a company falsely accused me of incompetence five months after leaving the company, despite many unanswered e-mails/faxes asking if the quality of my work was at question! The judge did not let me bring the accusation up! It took me almost a year (mainly due to the unhelpfulness of the authority concerned) to gather the information which I needed to prove the accusation was incorrect and this also proved gross negligence on the part of the company concerned. I have since demanded a withdrawal of the accusation on the part of the director concerned, an individual who was looking after his own interests and refused my requests to call a meeting of servicing personnel to discuss standards, without success. I take my profession too seriously to let this go. Any valid advice would be appreciated. should i move out of the neighbourhood or should i stay? I live in a suburban area in Canada and I can recall that when I first moved here about 30 years ago this was a fairly ordinary, convenient place to live in but now, especially within the last 10 years, since many of the neighbours have moved elsewhere or died or filed for bankruptcy,there has been an influx of foreigners who have flooded into this neighbourhood occupying a vast proportion of the surrounding homes around me (mostly muslim or arab or hindu indian populations, sorry I can't differentiate between these certain groups but a lot of them have turbans) and a lot of them are contributing to conflicts and disturbances, etc. Not to mention my nextdoor neighbours produce a strong, foul, unpleasant odor from the kitchen window at around dawn. Furthermore, if you try to be polite to them by greeting them when you get into the car in the morning they don't respond, instead they just bluntly stare at you and yell out at their kids. Additionally, they always converse amongst each other in their own language so they most likely lack basic and necessary English skills. My question is if people say that you can't thrive without being fluent in English then how do you explain the success of these people who have managed to defy all the odds and make a decent, standard living by invading our neighbourhoods without knowing a word of English. How can I make peace with myself? I've been realizing lately that I have been very troubled. For instance, I have felt paranoid about what nearly everyone thinks about me. I love martial arts class and frequently fantasize about hurting people. I've always felt happiest when I experiencing "Rage" and felt powerful over others. My favourite dreams include me looking down on people and laughing at them, or making people (men and women, particularly anyone more powerful) suffer. It has also been brought to my attention by others that I talk to myself, but I don't even remember what I say out-loud. I talk in my sleep too. I have a best friend who manages to out-do me in everything I wish I was good at. He seems to really want to bring our friendship to closer levels than I have felt comfortable allowing him too. Part of this is because I have caught myself relying on him for comfort, which really bothers me as a male. I recently have allowed myself to be open and comfortable in a relationship with a female (my first real female companion) which has progressed to certain intimacies, but is limited by the unspoken fact that she doesn't feel the same way about me as I do her. She says she can't find a single thing she doesn't like about me (her list) and has said she's amazed how I've got miles on 99% of the guys out there, but she's made it clear in subtle ways that she does not want to rely on me as well (maintains that she's single). However, the graduation rates in the places with the higher standards have more success than those states with the lower standards. Why do you suppose that is? Is it the teachers? I know that most states in the NE and Mid West, teachers are required to obtain a Masters degree, while in the South that is not a requirement. Just curious what your thoughts are.
