Is it still possible to make a small farm successful in modern day USA? I'm thinking of something along the lines of a vineyard, berry farm, or fruit orchard, something that fills a niche market. I'd also raise chickens, but mainly for the eggs and just for the family. The main goal is to work for myself, not someone else. Is something like this still possible in modern day America?
Which farming magazine is better? Progressive Farmer or Successful Farming magazine - which is better? Our son-in-law owns a 100 acre farm and has asked for a subscription to a farming magazine.
I have buyers from overseas who wants what I am selling. How do I get the money without being scammed? I am selling two tractors on the "Successful Farming" website see www.agriculture.com/classifieds and at the www.Machinerylinks.com website. One buyer who works overseas for Exxon in Libya has a colleage in Texas who will send a cashier's check for the price of one tractor and his friend will arrange with a shipping agent for pickup from the farm and shipping it overseas. The second buyer of a different tractor up for sale lives in England and will send a USPS money order for the price of the tractor and then it will be shipped from here to there. How can I recieve payment for these items and be guaranteed the funds are accepted at my bank?
Why is the Indian diaspora generally successful? Successful as in higher GDP, fairly big house, few cars. Some own farms, franchises. I've been to over 60 countries, and this is a pattern I've seen in nearly every country where there is a large Indian diaspora. Even in Tanzania or South Africa, where the average African starves for a loaf of bread, the Indians own businesses and are generally better off than the locals. What's the reason? Colin, do you have any idea what diaspora means? You need to take ESL classes.
If I am successful on Farmtown, how far does it indicate my potential success as a real farmer? Those of you familiar with the peaceful land of Farmtown will also know that it is no difficult task to succeed financially as a farmer, as the economy seems to be forever replete with enough seeds/stools/hay bales to tide the population (which is made up of at least four different hairstyles shared among 5 million inhabitants) over the winter, except there is no winter in Farmtown. I mean, come on. Can real farming really be that much harder?
Who are the people who study ancient tribes? I am doing a report on the Olmecs, (an ancient Mesoamerican tribe) and I am trying to finish this sentence: ____believe that successful farming led to...... ( ____ is what I'm missing) I was wondering if anyone knew what I should put there. I think the place I read it from said something like "scholars of" and something else. I was thinking of putting archaeologists but I wasn't sure.
If people are successful against the new world order what will happen to the people who wanted it? If people were to successfully rise up against the New World Order and stop it in its tracks, what would we do to the members of the New World Order? If we were to execute them then we would be no better than them and if we were to seize power, we could become corrupted like in most revolutions (Animal Farm). Who would lead everyone? Nearly every politician seems to be a part of this new world order.
Big brains and nimble hands made the human race successful, but will we survive our success? Farming resolved the big problem of foraging, the limited supply, but easier living meant bigger populations, cultivating corn meant extra corn borers, upsetting nature's balance. Industry meant more luxuries, easier life, but more pollution. More luxury meant higher expectations hence more greed, hence heightened competitions and more war! The easier it was to survive the greater the population, and increase in numbers increased competition without diminishing greed, which increased demand, the supplying of which puts increasing stress on the environment. Every success leads to more people living better, and every improvement creates increase in problems.
Real Estate Agents I have a question about farming?? I am fairly new to real estate. Been in the business about 4 months. I was wondering if any SUCCESSFUL agents have some advice on how to get clients? I know about talking to people and doing floor time, etc. I have not had much luck with that yet. Is farming a neighborhood a good idea? Does it really generate business? I know it can get expensive, but I am willing to do anything to get things rolling in my career. I am very eager and want to be busy. Please give me some advice. I work for Century 21 in Southern California.

How does one run a successful Ant farm? My 4-year-old son got an ant farm for his birthday. We set it up and sent for some ants which came in the mail and looked fairly healthy. We fed and watered them regularly but they have been steadily dying off, In fact we have only one little trooper left, We have had the farm for about a month or less. What might we have done wrong? I don't think I put too much water in, and the ants seemed extremely active up until their death. They didn't die all at once. Any ideas? (And no, the boy was not allowed to handle the ants)

Recently I came to know about a cost effective organic farming technique in India. Which uses......? cow dung, cow urine, jaggery, flour, soil, neem oil (as pesticide) and water. This technique says that each gram of cow dung has more than 500 crores of beneficial micro-organisms that make the soil more fertile. The dung generated by one cow is sufficient to produce organic manure for 30 acres. This natural fertilizer can be used for any crop. Mulching plays a vital role in this technique. Mixed cropping and crop rotation is used to ensure replenishment of soil fertility. In this system of farming no monetary investment on the part of farmer is required for purchase of seeds, fertilizers and plant protection chemicals from the market. The farmer can produce his own seed. More importantly, there is absolutely no place for fertilizers and plant protection chemicals in this scheme of farming. The whole philosophy behind this system is to make the farmer self-reliant by freeing him from market dispensed high cost inputs. Will this technique be successful in the long run?
what do you guys think congress will do? Farming & The Environment "If society wants a means of producing food, then a few, large farms is one way to do it. But if society wants a clean, thriving rural place to live and work and raise children, then you have to rethink this formula." -Cheryl Tevis, Successful Farming Magazine One of the most important issues confronting agricultural communities in the U.S. is the future structure of the livestock industry. The issue is whether livestock will be raised on sustainable family farms or produced in large, capital-intensive confinement facilities (factory farms) that concentrate the animals and their wastes in vast quantities and concentrate economic control in the hands of absentee investors. What's at stake? The prosperity of family farmers & rural communities The future of our country's rural environment The health of families and children The safety and affordability of our food
Farming experience question.? Hey I'm 18 years old, I've done very well in school, and I will be going to a big University in a few months so naturally I'm beginning to think about the things I want to pursue as a career. My grandfather was a very successful farmer who is now retired, but his rather large amount of farm land will eventually be passed down to me. Neither one of his sons(my father and my uncle) took up the family trade but rather pursued more lucrative office type jobs. But the more I get to know about myself the more I realize that that lifestyle isn't for me. I've been working at my dad's office this summer, and I have found that I need to do something that is mine, in which its success or failure is my responsibility so that I can labor and see the fruits of that labor clearly. I love the outdoors and I've always been more of a hands on work kind of person. I'm in good physical shape and I would do good with hard work. The problem is, although I have been exposed to some farming/ranch work, I'm not very experienced. So I have the land and the desire to farm, just not the experience. I'm set on going to college, and I'm going to major in business, agronomy, agriculture, etc. But I'm still wondering if anyone could give me a little insight on how to get the experience to be a successful farmer while still earning a college degree. My plan as of now is just to wonder around taking any experience-rich jobs until I feel comfortable coming home and running a place myself. Does anyone have any wisdom concerning my situation.
what about bear bile farming how wrong is that? About bear farming: WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) is helping tackle the ugly world of illegal wildlife trading. WSPA is working to highlight the suffering of bears on bear farms using innovative and ground-breaking tactics. Earlier this year, WSPA launched bear protein detection kits in partnership with Wildlife DNA Services, a specialist wildlife forensics organisation. The kits are currently being trialled by customs and wildlife officers in Australia and Canada and are designed to be very easy to use, working similarly to home pregnancy testing kits. Chris Gee, WSPA Bear Farming Programme Manager said: ‘WSPA investigations continue to confirm on a global level, that many bear bile products originate from China’s bear farms. Not only does bear farming give rise to illegal trade, but it is cruel, unnecessary and must end. WSPA is delighted that Animal Planet is calling attention to this.’ UK Trials UK trials have been successful – the Metropolitan Police Wildlife Crime Unit has completed a trial of the new kits and is keen to use WSPA’s new bear protein detection kits to aid their crackdown on the illegal traditional Asian medicine trade in the capital. Andy Fisher, Head of the Wildlife Crime Unit at the Metropolitan Police said: ‘WSPA gave us a number of test kits which we tried out on products that we had seized in recent raids on shops in London. We found bear bile present in a number of the medicines we had previously seized. I think we will find it really useful to have these kits with us on future raids, they will help us to do instant tests on suspicious items which we can then do further analysis on later.’ 12,000 Bears on Bear Farms Official figures show that there are at least 12,000 bears kept in bear farms throughout Asia, but WSPA believes it could be many more. The suffering of bears on bear farms is unmatched in terms of the acute suffering and the length of time the bears are forced to endure it. Courtesy of the WSPA
Deer Farming In Malaysia? I am haji akbar from kuala lumpur Malaysia. Right now our farm breeds around 2000 head of deer (timorensis, axis, sambar). Our breeding operation is successful. We were selling stock to small deer farms in Malaysia. We were also the main supplier of venison and velvet in peninsular Malaysia. However, our company is constrained by the size of our land holding. On the September of 2009, The State Government of Pahang has had a long standing idea to develop a large deer park at Sungai Jin, near Sungai Lembing, Pahang. The Department of Agriculture of Pahang gave us 252 acres of State land at Singai Jin for a deer farm. There is a small deer park operation there already.Sungai Lembing is an attractive place for tourist. We plan to move our entire operation over to Sungai Jin and create, in addition to a farm for stock breeding, a Safari Park operation. We have ideas ranging from children's animal petting: (we already have a successful children's photography operation now that operates in KL shopping malls); animal viewing for visitors in large, open paddocks; "glass chalet" accommodation units (for school over-nighting and featuring screens showing the movements at night of your electronically tagged animals); and even safari hunting. We have our own funds to invest and plan to search for partnership to develop the project. We were very happy to have a partner that interested with this project. Anyone who interested to be our partner in this project is free to contact us anytime. Haji Mohamed Akbar D’Paradise Deer Valley & Exotic Farm Sdn Bhd. why are the cheap farm teams consider "successful" while the high payroll teams consider "evil"? farm teams are a disgrace to the game. just look at the marlins firesale every year. they don't even want to pay for arbitration-eligible players. the whole idea of free agency and free market is to encourage player movement, which is good for the game. fans want to see the best players on the field, not those who should be honing their skills in the minors especially when prominent free agents are available. prospects become busts all the time. as fans, we want proven commodity with solid track record who produce year in and year out. and don't even get me started with salary cap, that's communism and it would ruin baseball like it did with nfl and nba.

If Matt Roloff were running for president would you vote for him? He is a very smart business man, runs a farm and a successful business. He has faced untold discrimination, and still keeps on rolling. I think he, along with his family exemplify everything America stands for. http://mattroloff.com/meet-the-roloffs/ Or perhaps Amy, and Matt as the first lady/man.

How well do you think the Texas Rangers will do in the 2009 season? With all these off-season moves, it's hard not to get excited. The Rangers were recently ranked the number one farm system in the game. Which might not matter that much, but they tend to call up a lot of successful young guys. Also, the fact that they have a new pitching coach and are possibly gonna sign Ben Sheets, how well do you believe they will do in 2009?

Would this be a good way to fight Global Warming at the grassroots level? Specifically, sending an email to Steven Jobs informing him that you won't buy any more iPods until he makes a solar powered version available. Discussion: One of the two obstacles that solar energy has in replacing fossil fuel on a large scale is the high cost and inefficiency of solar PV cells, the devices that convert sunlight (or any light) directly into electricity. It's going to take somebody with some vision, imagination and most importantly money to make PV cells cheap enough for evey Joe and Mary Sixpack to mount them on their roof and totally disconnect their homes from the fossil fuel power grid. Congress has the money, but since it is essentially split 50-50 these days, any Federal money is going to be spent where the most readily harvestable votes are, namely in farming states where the ethanol boom is already underway. Its true that iPods only consume a negligible amount of energy, but that would actually make it easier to reach the goal of producing a 99.99% "green" iPod that doesn't require recharging from an inefficient recharger on the wall thats being energized by a fossil fuel power plant somewhere. Buyers of next generation iPods would be a perfect market for such a device, and once its successful, Microsoft will of course want to play "me too" and compete with Apple in the same market, pushing along the drive to reduce manufacturing costs and increase PV cell performance. So here's a chance for the current Disposable Income generation to be at the forefront of the Global Warming fight and with little sacrifice on their part.
Diary of a Successful New Bride/Cook? Dear Diary, Monday Now home from honeymoon and settled in our new home, it's fun to cook for Bill. Today I made an angel food cake and the recipe said, "beat12 eggs separately." Well, I didn't have enough bowls to do that, so I had to borrow enough bowls to beat the eggs in. The cake turned out fine. Tuesday We wanted a fruit salad for supper. The recipe said, "serve without dressing". So I didn't dress. But, Bill happened to bring a friend home for supper that night. Did they ever look startled when I served the salad. Wednesday I decided to serve rice and found a recipe which said, "wash thoroughly before steaming the rice". So I heated some water and took a bath before steaming the rice. Sounded kinda silly in the middle of the week. I can't say it improved the rice any. Thursday Today Bill asked for salad again. I tried a new recipe. It said, "prepare ingredients, then toss on a bed of lettuce one hour before serving." I hunted all over the garden by my moms. So I tossed my salad into the bed of lettuce and stood over there one hour so the dog would not take it. Bill came over and asked if I felt all right. I wonder why? Friday Today I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said, "put all ingredients in a bowl and beat it." Beat it I did, right over to my mom's house. There must have been something wrong with the recipe, because when I came back home again it looked the same as when I left it. Saturday Bill went shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday. I'm sure I don't know how hens dress for Sunday. I never noticed back on the farm, but I found a doll dress and some little shoes. I though the hen looked real cute. When Bill saw it, I wondered why he counted to 10. Sunday Today Bill's folks came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast, but all we had in the icebox, was hamburger. So I put it in the oven and set the controls for roast. Must be the oven, because it still came out hamburger. Monday I was going to bake bread today. The recipe said, "mix well and knead well. Then stand in a warm place until double in bulk." I just won't bake bread if I have to double in bulk. Goodnight Dear Diary. This has been an exciting week. I am eager for tomorrow to come, so I can try a new recipe on Bill. Love, Pam

If you were inheriting a considerable amount of money, how would you invest it? Last year we lost $12,000 in an investment that went bad, however, one time we quadrupled. Since I'm inheriting this money, I don't want to risk losing it. My husband has a farm equipment painting and restoring business, that he kind of just keeps on the side, while he works for a very successful company...He's the best around in his business, but turns down customers all the time, cause it's run by him and his brothers, and they are limited in time. Being detailed work, it's hard to find good help. We have the acreage for this, should I possibly look into this? I was wondering about real estate. We have 8 1/2 acres, possibly adding some rental units?
If permaculture around the world is so successful and extremely sustainable , then why are heads in the sand? Look at Geoff Lawton who has grow food near the Dead Sea, where people there can't and is bringing back forrests. A garden fixes all problems of the world. The media must get attached to permaculture or there will be no oil left in our growing global world to build a sustainable world with. Cuba has done a great job with permaculture. They have health care, eat organic, aren't over weight all this with little oil. We better wise up and start planting food, not like the Los Angeles urbine farm that was bulldosed over for a Walmart warehouse. We are going to be in big trouble because of greed, politicians having no clue how to fix anything and the people getting worried. Wake up society and jump on our permaculture band wagon. You'll love the fact that you have more food to give, a better reason to live, a healthier life ,the lakes, streams, oceans can clear up and there will be know reason to fight an on going war for oil that's killing thousands of people for power of control.

Any tips for a 26 year old thinking of starting a State Farm Insurance agency? I have 1 year of experience in insurance working as a claims adjuster for one of the biggest p&c insurance companies and I am interested in trying to start my own agency. I know that I want to own my own business some day and I am just looking for the best oppurtunity to be successful. I am just worried about all the responsibility that comes with owning your own business (paying rent, managing employees, keeping your customers happy, etc.) I want the financial rewards that come from owning your own business but just am not sure I'm ready to take that leap. Any suggestions to tell if I could make it? Any suggestions to predict my success?
Why is the federal government giving 120+ BILLION to corporate farms in the form of tariffs and subsidies? In 2007 alone. This is pork if there ever was pork. Isn't it time for neoconservatives to stop attacking people of little means, and attack, much to the benefit of all americans, the sanctioned and mega bloated government investments in corn, soy, and sugar produced by Fortune 500 agriculture concerns? I have an MBA from a top 10 business school, studied macro and micro economics, and am a democrat, as well as a successful businessman. Without these subsidies and tariffs, prices would fall, to the end consumer, and, we would a bit closer to balancing the budget, and the recipients of these current dollar pork would have to CREATE new wealth, all beneficial outcomes.

What do you think Illegal immigrants a financial burden on Michigan ? For several months now, alarm bells in Lansing have been ringing uncontrollably as we are warned of the state's impending financial collapse should we fail to balance our budget and keep the cost of doing state business down. Unfortunately, many in Lansing are only willing to pay lip service to the problem rather than finding solutions to it. I choose to focus on the concerns of the taxpayers from the 74th district and their agenda, rather than the Lansing agenda of raising taxes and partisan bickering. For this reason, I am happy to join other Republicans in support of the Taxpayer's Agenda. An important part of this Taxpayer's Agenda is the creation of several task forces to address the issues that many in Lansing choose to neglect. I am excited to be a member of the Border Security and Immigration Reform, which focuses on homeland security and seeks ways to limit the negative impact that illegal immigration has on Michigan's economy. Taxpayer dollars are being used to subsidize illegal aliens in this state, and state programs are the vehicle that allows this. Medicaid costs have been increasing by millions annually, and the last thing we need is the added cost of care for people who should not be here in the first place. Other Midwest states have gone to a system where a Medicaid applicant must prove their citizenship before receiving assistance. After doing so, those states have seen a 5 percent reduction in Medicaid expenditures. If Michigan were to implement a similar program and achieve similar results, we could see a drastic decrease in Medicaid spending totaling roughly $125 million. Illegal immigrants who go to hospitals for emergency care rarely have the means to pay for their care. However, due to current laws, hospitals are not allowed to deny treatment based on inability to pay. As a result, the hospitals must count this "free" care as a loss, therefore passing the cost of this care onto other paying customers. Spectrum Health incurred charges of more than $700,000 last year alone on illegal immigrant health care, and they expect that figure to increase this year. Michigan's employment environment is also polluted with illegal immigrants. In fact, there have been several instances in which new projects have been hijacked by illegal immigrant workers. In the Thumb area of Michigan, the Harvest Wind Farm project so highly touted by Gov. Jennifer Granholm was being staffed by a contractor who hires not only out of state workers, but employs illegal immigrants as well. After first chiding the Republicans for forming the Immigration and Homeland Security Task Force, the Democrats have recently introduced legislation embracing some of our ideas. However, their half-hearted attempts don't stand up under scrutiny. Although they say they want to punish employers who hire illegals, they would only do so by canceling state contracts with these companies and requiring them to pay back incentives. No other punitive action would be taken. This is unacceptable. The latest task force hearing held in Jenison focused on homeland security threats that Michigan is now plagued with because of illegal immigration. Testimony included representatives from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Ottawa County Sheriffs, 9/11 families for a more secure America; and Jon DeWitte from Congressman Peter Hoekstra's office. The discussion centered on of law enforcement personnel, security officials and other concerned community members. We were successful in our mission to conduct a frank discussion in ways that we can end the unnecessary burden of illegal immigrants on our state. As my colleagues and I travel the state we look forward to hearing ideas from a diverse background. -- Rep. David Agema represents the 74th House District. He lives in Grandville. http://www.mlive.com/news/grpress/index.ssf?/base/news-0/1189233975131770.xml&coll=6
If clay is so bad for growing things, how was my clay-filled subdivision ever a farm? I live in an area with lots of clay, and I’ve been reading up on how to grow things in it. So many websites made it sound like clay is so bad. In a discussion my husband asked me “If clay is so bad, how did anyone ever farm here?” because our entire subdivision was a farm up until the 1950s. I think it’s a pretty good question. So is clay really not that bad or was it probably a not-so-successful farm?
would a series of microfarms have been better able to withstand the rigors of the dust bowl days in the 1930s? instead of the large cleared expanses that were prevalent in the southern plains states in the US in the 1930s (and still are today), would a series of small micro-farms interspersed among the wilderness have been better suited to cope with the dust bowl conditions back then? or would they have been just as vulnerable to the winds and drought as the large open tracts were? would a technique using micro-farming and/or permaculture be successful if such a situation arose again today? the climate is changing, it's best to have alternatives at the ready 'just in case'. it sounds more hopeful now, due to different techniques used. that's good news!
If liberal talk radio was successful, would republicans demand equal time and write law to silence it? i don't think so, we don't do it with newspapers or television..could you imagine the outcry if the tables were turned? demoncrats would be screaming bloody murder if republicans tried to force comedy central to have alternatives to the daily show or the colbert report...and you know we could not compete with the jockularity of those shows, so we would say.."we will put nothing on to oppose it" , so by law, those shows must be taken off the air...that's how the fairness doctrine works, it silences all views...am radio goes back to farm reports and evangelists 24/7..the funny thing is, and i don't think many think about this is this...the fairness doctrine only covers broadcast media, not cable,...the demoncrats ought to tread very carefully here, can you imagine rush limbaugh on say,..fox news for a couple hours every night??? hmmm...he might just save televisions sagging numbers huh? dragonoak,....fox news is not the government...simpleton.
