How do you balance Depression with work/uni/school????????????
I'm just wondering how others suffering with depression cope with work, uni or school? I been feeling down for a long time and now i feel like i've hit rock bottom, everything bad is happening to me. I have failed alot of my modules and my university is trying to throw me out. No matter how hard i try, I can do nothing right. If i get thrown out of university i'll have nothing, that was only thing going for me basically i'll be even more of a failure. I'm going to see my doctor this week and to ask for anti depressants in order to sort my life out. If i'm lucky and get on to the 2nd year hopefully the anti depressants will help me cope better with uni work. But my question is how do you balance your depression with work or school???????

- Bad things are happening to you because thats what you are expecting. If you're university is trying to throw you out, they must have a reason. But being depressed isn't helping you against that, it's actually helping them. Being depressed is obviously not helping you so why do it? Theres so much to live for and shouldn't let you bring you down. I suffer from a certain lvl of depression as well.
- The best thing to do is smile. It makes you feel happier and I do it before I have to do something that is worrying me, or that is stressing me out. 9 time out of 10 I feel strong enough to do anything. Give it a go, smile - people will wonder what you've been upto.
- Don't just go to the doctor for pills and expect them to fix everything.... because the don't. They may help with concentration, but if you are really depressed go see a counselor or therapist and work with them to make a plan and strategies how to deal with everything you are feeling and dealing with.
- pills
- I have something a little different, I am bipolar, but for most of my life I have been fighting to be as close to norm as possible. My 1st question would be did you see a doctor, have you bee diagnosed, are you taking meds the way they are directed to be taken --- assuming you say yes to the above then seeking a therapist would help, it helps to have someone who is only thinking of your welfare if you said no then - you need to go and get some professional help, they will help and have a game plan for you to improve your life remember nothing happens overnight, do as the docs advise and thing will turn around good luck
- DO NOT TAKE ANTI DEPRESSANTS. Drugs are never the answer. The is a song lyric that really hit home for me "you can run all your life and not go anywhere" what ever it is you are hiding from or afraid of isn't going to disappear if you hide from it and taking drugs to numb your heart and your brain is hiding. When my father died and my mother kicked me out of the house I was messed up to say the least I was 17. I spent three years taking every drug known to man legal and ill legal and when I finally stopped, everything I was running from was right there in my face . it took another 9 years to undo all the damage I had done to my life in those three years. So if you are depressed about school, do not hide from it... Face it! Get tutoring, go to your councellor and do whatever it takes... and really do it but if you want to be an empty shell of a person go ahead and take the pills so you won't immediately feel the pain as you flush you life down the toilet.
- Hi, i have suffered with depression and an eating disorder whilst at school and now currently in uni also. I am seeing a uni counsellor, it was a great move for me, i would deffinately suggest it and even though it is the summer now the service stays open and this could be the same with your university, contact them, speak to a counsellor and they may even be able to right a letter to yor advisors explaining you have been to see the counsellor, as mine did. i am not sure how much this will stand in your favour at this stage but your healthis more important and counselling, although seems daunting can be great. So glad you are going to see the docs! Anti-depressants don't make everything better alone, a lot of time they are beneficial only alongside counselling and self motivation to get better. there is help out there and i understand so well how hard life is to cope with everyday with depression, never mind adding school or college demands on top! if you want to talk email me! best of luck xxx
- At the university level you are capable of learning what makes depression and how the chemicals affect our lower or auto brain. After you have some idea of the causes of depression you can then learn to change. All your education will go down the tubes if you don't master this . The pills will finally dull you to where nothing matters. In this section of answers you can see the sad results of a lifetime of depression. Oh and by the way you are made an outcast by friends and family first . Then it is your role everywhere.
- I dont think answers people are giving, such as smile or theres so much to live for, so do it are suitable answers. its obvious theres something wrong, and youre right in going to your doctors. they decide whether to send you to a mental health professional, and then you get assesed. i think they will find that something has developed, but i am only going off the basic details youve given. you get asked about your life, past events, whats happened etc. etc. and they decide where to take it. in all honesty, pills arent enough, if you have depression, youll need counselling and such. but in all honesty, youre really brave. why? because its more than i can do with the state i am in at the moment. i understand what youre going through - im possibly bi-polar.
- You are getting so many different answers you won't have a clue what to do! If you are feeling depressed go to the doctors, explain everything to he/she, then take it from there, don't make any decisions until then, don't worry help is out there good luck.
- It is VITAL that you TELL the uni what you are going through. Depression is an ILLNESS and they CAN offer you support. You don't have to be ashamed of it, the uni CAN offer you support and help. They have policy's etc. You need to tell them what you are going through. And then go and talk to your GP. Who may or may not decide to prescribe anti-depressants. There might be some sort of counselling that Uni or your GP can offer as well. If depression has caused you to "fail" uni that isn't your fault. You need to tell your tutors. They may every well be thinking you just can't be arsed and don't care!!!
- just do it
- I have suffered from depression and found it difficult to cope with work. I was grumpy most, if not all, of the time. When I went on Prozac things became easier. All the best!
