How successful will be wind energy farms in the years to come?

1. very successful, the city of houston is planning on building one
2. I can't see them providing much of the worlds power for a few reasons 1) The peole who want the power don't want the wind farms near their homes - NIMBYism to the extreme 2) The wind farms take up a lot of land which is needed in many places for other purposes 3) Only certain locations are good for wind farms, and many of these are miles away from users so would be uneconomical 4) They can't be placed near airfields, or radar installations, as they block the signals in an erratic way (so clutter maps can't be produced for the radars)
3. They have the potential to be very successful. Currently every state has a major wind farm that generates electricity. They can however become better. The problem with wind farms now is that they take up a lot of space, kill migratory birds, make a lot of noise, and make arable land not arable, so there are still environmental concerns. Wind farms save us from as much strip mining and burning coal, but improvements need to be made. A smaller windmill that work more efficiently is in the works, but for now the huge towering eye sores will have to do.
4. they will be very successful, because they already have been. an excellent example the area around Spokane in Washington state where some towns are using about 85% wind generated electricity. All of which is generated on the nearby hillsides. Obviously however some area with very little wind would have to get energy from wind farms in other areas or from other sources. However this would be very few areas since the wind turbines only need about a 4-6 mile per hour wind to generate a large amount of electricity. And in response to the I don't want that in my back yard group, would you rather have a coal or nuclear power plant in your back yard?
