2. Russel Simmons is successful because of Def Jam. He is the founder (with Rick Rubin) of the label that started the careers of Run DMC & The Beastie Boys and is generally considered one of the forerunners of hip-hop. Simmons left college in the early eighties to promote and produce hip-hop acts (including his younger brother Run's Run DMC). Def Jam is the main reason Russel Simmons is successful.
