Why is the federal government giving 120+ BILLION to corporate farms in the form of tariffs and subsidies?

In 2007 alone. This is pork if there ever was pork. Isn't it time for neoconservatives to stop attacking people of little means, and attack, much to the benefit of all americans, the sanctioned and mega bloated government investments in corn, soy, and sugar produced by Fortune 500 agriculture concerns? I have an MBA from a top 10 business school, studied macro and micro economics, and am a democrat, as well as a successful businessman. Without these subsidies and tariffs, prices would fall, to the end consumer, and, we would a bit closer to balancing the budget, and the recipients of these current dollar pork would have to CREATE new wealth, all beneficial outcomes.

  1. For no good reason except political clout. I agree with you.
  2. Farm subsidies have been around for a long time, through both Republican and Democratic administrations. The problem is that it is such a small part of the budget, it is not worth it for a politician to take on the lobbies to get the subsidies reduced or eliminated. The logic is: "why alienate voters for such a small benefit?" It makes no difference how wasteful it is, the problem is that the amounts are dwarfed by the 60% of the budget we spend on entitlement payments and the 20% we spend on defense, so why anger a bloc of voters just to reduce the budget by .2%? Addn: Santa Bud, the subsidies are used to prop prices up for the purpose of maintaining farms' profitability. So if subsidies were removed, does it not stand to reason that we would pay less for groceries?
  3. Impressive credentials..... I presume you know how eliminating these subsidies will affect the prices we pay for groceries as consumers?? I don't have that background myself.
  4. I am not aware of attacks against little people, and people of little means, but I am aware of democrat supporting farm companies receiving bulks of money from the government as far back as Truman and FDR. The simple solution is this. Remove all federal government welfare for people and for businesses. Remove all forms of tax exemption except for charities and churches, and remove all forms of deductions. Tax income only, and tax it at set percentage rates. Remove the bureaucracy, and you remove the problem. It has nothing to do with dems or reps, but with crooks of both parties.
  5. Since your that educated why don't you tell us what the problem is? I'm not being sarcastic, I really want to know. Like so many other Americans they have me fooled about the importance of why 120 billion should be given to corporate farms so if it's not to much to ask I would appreciate you e-mailing me or post it on answers so we can all see, and learn.
  6. As a conservative, I've been against welfare of any form - including corporate and agricultural - for a long time. I'm against pork-barrel spending and against government mandated pricing, whether for milk or for minimum wages. Because none of it is Constitutionally supported as authorized Congression spending. But it is hard to fight against the masses of plebes voting themselves bread & circuses, and hard to unseat the re-election whores who promise it to them.
  7. It's called quid pro quo. ADM, Monsanto, and Con Agra pay to get you elected, now it's time to pass some pork barrel bills on their behalf. "We want laissez faire free markets" means they want tarifs lowered on the other side of the fence, but heaven forbid we should do away with them here! All of these so called champions of free market capitalism are government welfare bums and crybabies that don't want to have to compete in a level-playing field marketplace.
  8. I find it ludicrous that the federal government has ANY farm subsidies at all. A farm is a business like any other business. If I buy a 7-11 and sell fewer Slurpees than originally envisioned, will the feds send me a nice fat check? Of course not! Why should farmers be treated any differently?
