What are characteristics of a successful restaurant manager?
I'm looking for what it takes to be successful enough to move up the restaurant business career ladder. I'm still in college and I'd like to know what skills or traits to develop while I have time.

- Honest, Fair, offers praise when it is due, strong work ethic.
- Well my father owns and his brothers own a restaurant chain in chicago and they are honest, never cheat their customers, and always make everything easy on their customers especially because they do a lot of catering to pharmasuitcals and reps...they always come back and bring a lot of service
- Doesn't really matter if it's a restaurant manager or a retail manager, the qualities are the same. Leadership really encompasses most of it. Willingness to learn is also important, because every restaurant or chain has it's own "system."
- You have to be able to tell people what they want to hear. You need to know every process and procedure in your restaurant down to how to change the oil in the fryers. You have to know how to pace yourself (time management) and know how to identify your staffs' strengths and weaknesses and how to use them properly. Learn to prioritize and when there's a problem, always have a solution or suggestion. Always be there when a patron has a problem. That will make them feel important and keep them from badmouthing the place.
