  1. 1. Don't count on it. A lot of this type of success has to do with random luck, and lightning may not strike where you are. Many very talented artists go unrecognized. 2. Work. You can't actually be lazy it you're going to produce enough artworks to live off. 3. Be persistent. The distinguishing factor (besides luck) between success and no success is keeping at it. You have to develop a very thick skin, and not let rejection make you give up. 4. Be connected. That means network. Go to galleries and shows and try to connect with people, not like harassing them but just to meet them. Keep acquaintances and friends updated on your work. 5. Contextualize your work. When you look at what all else is out there, how does your work fit in? If you paint puppies and cornfields, there's no point trying to interest a gallery in your work if they specialise in hard-edged abstraction or cutting-edge conceptual art.(Or vice versa) 6. Keep it real. Identify your strengths and go with them; don't try to compete in arenas where you're weak. Either strengthen yourself, or look for a more suitable arena. 7. Actually make the work. Draw/paint/whatever every day, all the time. 8. Persistence, again. It's essential. Good luck!
