How much time do you really need to invest to be successsful in real estate?

I am considering getting a real estate license in CA. I would like an advice how much time you actually must spend in order to be successful. Some talks like it's a easy job but I am very skeptical about it. Also what is considered successful? What is the downside of being self employeed? What is the typical cost that you must pay out of your pocket when you become a real estate agent?
