Why are my happy face symbols not transferring to the recipients email?

When I email happy face symbols, they turn into a light gray square box on the recipients end. What's going on?? I even tried emailing to my 2nd email address on the same computer (both yahoo, set up same day on same computer) and it won't transfer either. So I don't think it is the font (as some of you have suggested). Any other ideas?

1. The recipient does not have the necessary Font installed on his/her computer to read these symbols. Perhaps try creating the faces with a more common Font, like Wingdings
2. The recipient does not have the same fonts loaded on their computer
