Why do crabs have a happy face on their shell?

  4. That's only some species, and it's a product of the shape of their shell. It isn't a face at all. They answer to this question lies not with crab physiology, but human psychology. We are adept at recognising faces, it is an extremely important aspect of our survival- tell friends from enemies, mates from mothers, offspring from runt siblings... This is so strong that we even see faces in the 2D images on photographs, illustrations and cartoons, in clouds, on crabs, in grilled-cheese sandwiches, coffee-stains, potato chips, even on Mars.

  7. I have heard it speculated that these crabs were so astonishing to the Japanese that caught them, that they let them go. Because they wouldn't be eaten as often, these crabs became the most numerous.
