Is it possible to know your Yahoo happy face is on without knowing it?

I'm a bit skeptical when my boyfriend tells me he knows nothing about his yahoo happy face being on. The weird thing is, it was always asleep when he sends me an e-mail but lately, it has been on once in a while. Could he be using messenger? OR could it really be possible he doesn't know that it is on?
