What Type of happy Face is ^_^ ?

Hey I was talking with a coworker at my job and They said ^_^ was a japanase happy face? why would it be japanase instead of chinese or something.. Can anyone help me out

1. Could be kind of dopey person. You know like 'high' or something. I don't do drugs myself, but it does kinda look like a careless, no-worries face.
2. Looks like a Pokemon sort of thing. It's commonly used among fans of Japanese culture.
3. It's often used by anime fans and most anime comes from Japan therefore it can be interpreted as a japanese happy face.

5. just don't worry about it. if you want it to be Chinese then it's Chinese. Japanese is probably the 1st thing that came to their minds at the time. it doesn't look happy anyway, it looks solemn.
