is someone online if the happy face ico is on next to the email address but they appear to be offline on IM?

i'm just curious how can you tell if someone is on line if they appear to be off line on IM and yet the happy face icon is lit(or on line) next to their email address???

1. No. They are not.
2. some people can be logged into Yahoo groups and not YM, they could even be on YM with a different ID
3. i think that they are.... they may be logged on to their comp but not to messenger...
4. two possibilities. signed into yahoo but not IM or set status on messenger to invisible
5. they probably are online but on IM they have selected 'invisible to everyone' or that person has blocked you
