Where can I find marriage records for English soldiers based in India during WW2?
Ideally I want somewhere I can get free access - Im trying to trace my family tree & have got a bit stuck as my Grandfather went to India in WW2 & married a local woman - I cant find any trace of their marriage but know they were definately married & approx what year they married.

- It will cost some money but try Ancestry.com
- well if your grand father was married and his marriage was registered then i think you can trace out the records. Here in India there are lot of Archives maintained by Government. All old records are kept there. You can apply in the prescribed format and can get a photocopy of your record. There will be a nominal fee for tracing the same. If you can send the details may be i will enquire and let you know the formalities.
- I would try and ask the Ministry of Defence Whitehall. if they have any records here in England. If you give his name, rank and id No. they might be able to help you. Knowing the Indian Government and their staff I would say that you would be open to long delays and more than likely have to pay a bribe to get things moving!!!
- i had the same problem with a ww11 marriage in palestine - never did find the marriage cert. - definitely not at the pro in the u.k. it costs approx. UK100 to access a particular WWII u.k. record & you need to know their service number. that's if it wasn't burnt. I was only able to obtain info from divorce records & subsequent u.k. marriage & death records. good luck with your search.
- you could try findmypast.com i found my grandas record there they cover both world wars and other conflicts. hope this helps you . susan h.
