How successful has the tram network been in Shefield? Do they run at a profit?and has car traffic reduced?

Here in Edinburgh we are always hearing how successful the tram system is in Sheffield but I learned only recently that Stagecoach have taken over the system. Why? and how much did they pay for it? Were the debts written off? The public don't want trams here only the politicians do but we are getting them anyway.

1. They also have them in south London, Croydon, Wimbledon etc. I think the London trams do ok, more efficient and speedy than buses, and they're not spewing out fumes.
