1. I would say honesty is the most important thing for a good relationship, with anyone! Open communication is very important! The parents need to be comfortable lettting the nanny know exactly what they expect, and the nanny needs to be comfortable letting the parents know exactly what she expects, and everything that happens on a daily basis. Open, honest communication, definitely!
2. are you talking about a live-in nanny? I'm going to assume you're not because I think the answer is a lot more complicated if the person is going to become virtually a member of your family. Trust, similar ideas about how to treat children, common goals for how to raise children, understanding how to deal with an emergency, ability to communicate effectively with each other, clearly defined responsibilities and job expectations.
