Do relationships with a big age difference between them work?

I am a 51 year old female, some say I look ten years younger, and have a 38 year old male interested in me. I have never dated more than 5 years one way or the other and fail to see how they could last in a relationship. The things they have in common I would thing dwindle as I grow older. Any successful relationships out there like this? What makes em work, and what is a sure indicator it wouldn't work? I have grown children he has young ones.

  1. It works if you want it to. Age shouldn't make any difference (thinking the two in the relationship aren't minors) just like looks and height shouldn't matter. Try it out. If you're uncomfortable, explain this to him and go from there. Everybody's different so I can't speak for anybody but myself. If he makes you happy and you want to be with him, then go for it :)
  2. any relationship can work....it's just how you approach every day during that relationship
  3. As unfair as it sounds I believe the opposite age gap has more staying power but I am basing that on gut and a whole lot of uneducated speculation. My husband is 10 yrs older than I am. My friend's husband is 27 years older than she (they have been married 10 years - first marriage for both). My first boyfriend married a woman 15 years his senior and it lasted 2 and a half years. I say commitment is key and don't let the extraneous garbage get in the way.
  4. There isn't a clear indicator, it just depends on the two people involved. Some people are more mature than others and some people less. My fiance is 14 years older than me but I think our relationship works because I am more mature for my age(I went through a lot as a kid and had to grow up pretty fast) and I am looking for a lot more stability and calmness then a lot of women my age (I'm 28). I have friends that still love to go out and party every weekend. Just think about what you are looking for (do you want to deal with two young kids?) and what he is looking for and see if it matches. If so, take a chance, you never know.
  5. my parents are 10 years apart and they've been married for 22 years. give it a try.
