Is it possible to live a successful life without attending college or university ?
I'm graduating High School in three months, and I've been accepted at a college however I keep on thinking about all of the costs associated with college life, and I ask myself is it really worth it ? I plan on hopefully becoming a police officer I've known people who live successful lives without ever attending college or university. Do you agree with this ? What did you do after High School ? How long did it take you to find your career ? Jordan

- I graduated from a Univ. in India. Complete and utter waste of time and tree for that damb degree I still haven't received. "I've known people who live successful lives without ever attending college or university. Do you agree with this ?" Of course there are, but remember such people are more the exception than the norm.
- It is not possible to live a successeful life without going to college you have to get a good scholarship if you want a good job so it is good for you to go to college
- Many people live very successfully without college degrees...it just depends on what line of work you want to go into. You want to be a police officer...you don't necessarily have to go to COLLEGE unless of course you want to rise in the ranks eventually...but my dad was a cop all my life and we lived a pretty comfortable life...nothing fancy, but we all had everything we needed, and a lot of what we wanted (within reason). I'm a medical transcriptionist...I never went to college, but I did go to a training school. I make a very comfortable living and I've been able to help put both my kids through college on my own after my divorce (no help from dad)....
- It depends on your definition of sucess... There are plenty of people who are sucessful without college. They are able to have a house/rent, have families, have certain luxeries. However, the market for jobs is slim without an education after high school. More and more occupations require training beyond high school. The higher paying jobs do require some sort of a degree from a college/university (including police work) I started off at a community college and took classes that interested me...by doing this I was able to discover my passion for history...which led me to a career in teaching History.
- Jordan u must know that persons who attend a college have a different view of life than someone going at the university. If u want to become a policeman, you must at least finish all the certificates u have in the college.(or else you''ll become n ignorant just as my mate). Now i am working as a teacher at ........... TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY and am teaching there finance there. To be sure of making a succesful career find out the subject u like the most not the one in which u work the best.
- Statistically, individuals with College degrees earn more money over a life time then those without a degree. However, having a "successful" life means more then obtaining a college degree and making money. The money part is just the material aspect of a full life. If you plan on becoming a police officer make sure you full fill the basic educational requirements. If college credits or a degree are necessary go for it. Do not under any circumstances attend college just because it's expected of you. There are options....you're young...and college is not for everyone I entered college right out of high school at age 18 even though I hated the thought of it.....sure enough I partied to much and was kicked out with a 1.00 GPA :). The year was 1967 so I ended up getting drafted into the Army. Spent 7 years in the service and did not really know what career I wanted to pursue until I was 27.... that's when I went back to college... I'm 61 this month and believe I have a successful life as a father, husband and wage owner.
- You can be very successful without a college degree. Bill Gates was a college drop-out, for example. If you want to be a police officer, enlist in the military. You may be ridiculed for this decision, but you get physically fit, learn about weapons, combat, discipline, and other skills important with dealing with criminals. Police departments like military veterans. After high school I went straight to college, almost flunked out my first semester, graduated with honors, and learned the job market for college graduates is generally not what people think. It took me about 10 years after college to settle into a career where I was set for life. The main thing is, be the very best you can be at what you do. Not good, or "striving" ... but completely driven to succeed. Colleges are like car dealers. Go to this college, get a diploma, and you suddenly have a brain. (The movie the Wizard of Oz was mocking education when the scarecrow announced he had a brain when given a diploma.) The reality is, people that succeed do so regardless of the obstacles, training, criticism, ridicule, "advice", or anything that gets in their way.
- Yes, of course it is. If you are able to be self employed you won't need any special courses. Most people need qualifications if they are competing in the job market to become employees. You may for instance have a hobby that you can turn into a profitable business. There are many people and entrepreneurs that have had little or no education. Sir Alan Sugar is a good example.
