Should I change MBA programs in New York (From Baruch to Touro)?

I am 26 yrs old & in my 1st semester at Baruch College for a General MBA. The material isn't that hard, but there is a lot of work outside class (e.g., group work) & I am looking at 3 years of hard school twice a week (+ summers & winters). My career situation & aspirations are as follows: I work for a retailer as a Process Analyst (Process Improvement) & make around 50k. I enjoy my 40 hr work week & don't think I'll ever want a Wall St. job or one that alters my work/life balance. I enjoy the field I'm in (2 yrs experience), & the employer I work for, & plan on staying in the NY/NJ area. Eventually I may become a consultant, or a Sr. Mgr. in a small company, or start my own company, but for now I'm happy where I am. I would like to be earning at least 70k within 3-4 years. Should I switch to Touro's MBA Program which is less demanding, can be done 4 nights/week & takes 2 yrs. (minus summers & winters)? Is Baruch that much better in my situation? Will I miss out on needed networking?

  1. Not all programs are created equal..... With that said you must consider several things: 1) Which place will fit my time/ schedule? 2) Which school will properly prepare me for my future career? 3) Which school has a reputation for excellence? Give the school some time. If it seems like it doesn't fit into your lifestyle then it might be time for a change. Also keep in mind that a school name helps. The more people that have heard of your school, the better it sounds for you. A place like Touro will not garner the same level of familiarity as will a Baruch and especially since Baurch is know for it's business program.
  2. Nope, nope nope nope, don't transfer to Touro. Touro's MBA is not AACSB accredited. Many employers (a growing number) will not hire MBAs unless they'd attended an AACSB accredited program. Transfering to Touro may seriously hamper your ability to get jobs in the future. Baruch is one of the top ranked part-time MBA programs in NY. It is AACSB accredited. If you can, I'd have you stay there. Are you in their part time program? If you are not, then drop down to part time. If you are, then try to find a way to schedule your classes such that you do two in one night, rather than having them on separate days. Fordham allows you to do that (so if you must transfer because Baruch is too much, at least go to Fordham which is reputable and accredited.) If transferring is a must, then other reputable, strong, part-time MBA programs around the area are at Fordham, as I mentioned, and at Rutgers/Newark. NYU, of course, but that's hard to get in to. And if it's a 40 hour work week you want, don't do consulting. That won't be a good fit.
  3. you only get out what you put in. How are you going to run your own business if you do not want to work hard?
