Throughout the history of life, what evolutionary traits do the most successful species have in common with each other?

- Adaptability and numbers. If they are adaptable to a variety of weather conditions and food sources and if there are many of them, they are very likely to succeed and prosper. Just my view.

- Exploitation of an environment that's likely to exist through thick and thin and that isn't being exploited by competitors. The longest existing animal species is Triops cancriformis. These crustaceans live in vernal pools. There will always be vernal pools, right? They lay "eggs" which can last for years until conditions are right for "hatching."
