What are you supposed to say when someone says, "Happy Birthday!"?

Because today was my birthday, and everyone just says "Happy birthday!" and then just waits there waiting for a response, and it's really awkward. What am I supposed to say?

  1. You say thank you!!! If its not your birthday, don't say anything.
  2. A simple, "Thankyou" should suffice.
  3. Thank you!
  4. "Thank you" would be the response most people are looking for.
  5. Just say thank you. I've noticed that too, I just had my birthday recently. By the way: Happy Birthday! (And you are not obligated to respond, lol!)
  6. Thanks, you too! Obviously, it probably isn't their birthday also... but it would be hilarious and awkward.
  7. thank you. with a smile ahaha
  8. were you kept in a cage as a child? how do you not know what to respond? wow. wow. lol THANKYOU :) have a nice day
  9. "Thank you" would have been the proper response. They're wishing for you, so you thank them.
  10. thank you
  11. Thank you.... I saw a similar situation a month ago. In the office it was the birthday of a co worker. So everybody that came in first thing in the morning was to look at him and say : Happy Birthday Steve! His answers were: Oh, thanks for that. Thank you very much. I appreciate you remember it, thank you. Thanks a lot.
  12. Just say, "Thank you."
  13. You say "thanks, I'm turning 18 today" This works if you're older, lol. If you're a young person just say "yep, it's going to be awesome" Usually, people just want to know what you're up to so you might just start some small talk about your plans "oh thank you, yeah i'm really excite we're going to _______tonight" But if anythign a simple thank you should suffice. Just remember to smile :)
  14. "I'm wearing a diaper!" That one'll throw 'em for a loop! Or just do like the Vulcans do and say "acknowledged" And I really am wearing a diaper by the way.
  15. What was your reply 12 months ago when you had your last birthday? I assume you have a birthday every year, so whatever worked last year should be ok this year.
  16. Thank you would be nice. ...... an invitation for a little birthday party celebrations perhaps. No celebration at all? Anyway, happy birthday to you. Cheers!
  17. Thank you, if it actually is you birthday. If its not your bday you can say thank you anyway and politely correct them. Or if you feel like being a jerk, say "Why are celebrating the fact that I am one year closer to my inevitable demise?"
  18. A simple THANK YOU>
  19. You say, THANK YOU. Is it really that complicated to figure out?
