How do you find marriage records?

How do you look up public records (for free) either online or at the courthouse/ register of deeds. I am trying to find out if someone got married in Durham, NC.

Public Comments

1. go to the county records it should come up you need the maiden name of the bride also
2. Durham is in Durham County and the marriage license records there are held by the Register of Deeds office. Their online public record search is at http://rodweb.co.durham.nc.us/localization/menu.asp . In the document types drop-down they show a 'Delayed Marriage License' type in the index but no other mention of Marriage documents in the index. Might be best to call them first: Phone: 919-560-0480.
