What Makes a Successful Politician (reference sites needed)?

I'm doing my senior project on what traits make for a successful politician. These traits can be physical or personality traits. I have to have reputable sites for reference too (no wikipedia). Also, if anyone knows of any books that describe becoming a successful politician, that would be optimal. Oh, and these politicians can be either modern-day, or historical figures.

Absolutely no conscience, the ability to lie through your teeth, no problem pushing grandma down the stairs to get to some spare change before her, likes to tell us common people to drive less to stop global warming while all along zipping across country on your private jet, and last but not least they really don't have the skills to make a living in the private sector. These are just a few attributes of a successful politician.
