What do you write on a birthday card when it's a sad time for the person?

I'm getting a card to attach to a gift for my friend's birthday. Only thing is, his grandma just passed away yesterday, so it's not such a happy time- I don't know what to write on the birthday card besides "Happy Birthday." I was also gonna get him a sympathy card.

Well of course, send a birthday card, and inside sat, "I know this is tough. Remember there are people who love you, and try to be happy because it's your birthday and I care." Also, hand delivering it to him will make it more sincere.
