What's the best way of saying "Happy Birthday" in German?

At school I was taught "alles gute zum Geburtstag", but my German friend said something else, so I was wondering the correct phrase? I'm writing a birthday card to my German friend, so need to know! Thanks

2. The alternative is "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag", but your version is as good, and much easier to pronounce, though most Germans would use "herzlichen Glückwunsch".
