What is the relation between hardness and resistance of a material?

For instance diamonds are the hardest materiasl but i wonder if it could be as successful as concrete or rocks in load bearing. Diamonds seem to be very fragile though.. Maybe a comparison could be made with glass and diamond.. But is there a relationship between hardness and resistance?

  1. i think if i remember right, Resistance is how well a rock resists being scratched. so no, its not the same as hardness.
  2. no diamonds are not fragil lol. hardness is based on the mohs scale and puts elements in order from hardest to softest (1 beong softest and 10 being hardest). the resistance comes into play when placing that particular mineral on the mohs scale. if u get 2 rocks and scrape them up against each other, the one that scrapes the other has more resistance. when u know that u can start placing them on the scale. so, lets say that the mineral that got scraped was talc (the softest mineral ever, a 1 on the mohs scale) now u know that the other mineral is not talc, and it is higher that 1 on the mohs scale. lets say u take that same mineral and scrape it against diamond, and the diamond scratches it, that means ur mystery mineral is neither talc, or diamond , and has a hardness between 9 and 2. so the resistance to a mineral is its hardness (srry it took so ling i hope this helps....)
