Why did Fonzie's shirt change from a white t-shirt to a black t-shirt on Happy Days?

One of my co-workers says it was a silent memorial or tribute to Fonzie's idol, James Dean, who happened to have died around the same time.

3. I was led to believe that it was in fact a silent tribute to James Dean. Let me know if you find out if this is in fact correct.
