Public Comments

  1. Chuck Cunningham was played by Gavan O'Herlihy & Randolph Roberts. Gavan appeared in 9 episodes of Happy Days throughout 1974 (2 of which he actually didn't star yet his name appeared in the credits). In 2005, he appeared in the 30th Anniversary Reunion of Happy Days. His filmography since Happy Days is rather vast. At present, he is filming "The Descent: Part 2", due for release in 2009. Randolph appeared in 2 episodes of Happy Days throughout 1974 and also appeared in the 30th Anniversary episode. His filmography proceeding Happy Days is not great, with his last performance (other than the anniversary episode), being in 1986. He did however win a "TV Land" award this year (2008) for Favorite Character(s) Who "Went Missing".
  2. Chuck was written out during the series' second season with no explanation and was rarely referred to again. Scripts from later seasons implied the Cunninghams had two, not three children. However, in the third and fourth-season recap versions of the Christmas episode, "Guess Who's Coming To Christmas", Fonzie — recalling his first Christmas with the Cunninghams — tells Arnold, and later, Al, that Chuck was "away at college." In a Happy Days reunion show from 2005, the cast mentioned that Chuck had won a scholarship to the "University of Outer Mongolia" to play basketball, as a sort of an inside joke. An officially circulated outtake from the final episode has Mr. Cunningham raising a glass to the entire cast and saying "to Happy Days." After taking a sip, he blurts out in mock surprise "Wait, where's Chuck?!" In the aired version, Mr. Cunningham specifies that he has two children (Richie and Joanie). The unexplained removal of a character in a TV series has come to be known as "Chuck Cunningham Syndrome".
