Is it really that bad????

I'm a high school senior that entering a combined Math/Education university program next year with aspirations to become a Jr. High or High School teacher. I have had the great fortune be have been taught by some great young math teachers that were really fun and seemed like they had nice, balanced lives Yet after reading many of the threads here I can't help but feel that maybe the teaching proffesion is really not that appealing, as many people, including teachers, are openly mocking this "noble proffesion" due to financial reasons, student issues, admin. issues, all kinds of stuff.... Most of it is really depressing and really makes me second guess my career choice My question is if teaching has that many negatives associated with it? I have always loved math and enjoyed tutoring peers/siblings Where I live (Canada) teachers make $50 000 CND a year to start, which I dont cosider that bad, especially for getting the summer off... Any help or advice would be appreciated

  1. You have to decide what your "contribution" to young people will be...Also what clubs..etc you will be involved in. Teaching comes from the heart of you. My Mother was a teacher and she was something else. She had such a beautiful way of making every last student FEEL like they were the most important person in the world. Before that she was a nurse for 20 yrs. And she raised 11 children. I substitute taught for a year and I LOVED IT, Once you get into student teaching you will find out what you need to make a final decision. The part that will be hard is the poliltical correctness...If your a christian I strongly suggest you look for a christian school to teach in...Secular school will destroy your spirit. Based on the experience I've had I feel that people are blaming teachers' for how their kids turn out...But I sincerely feel that kids have to have that "good" foundation of home life inorder to make a parent proud in the end. Teachers' should not have to be responsible for the morals of children that should've started at HOME BASE. Teachers' can certainly add to that block but they should never be held responsible for all of it. Whatever you do don't make a final decision until you take the full term of student teaching...Also go to some schools, both christian and secular and ask alot of questions. If your going to college I might also suggest taking teachiing as your major and then pick a business minor. There are plenty of companies that will snap up a good mathematician.
  2. My dream is to be a teacher, but I went a different route. In America, they don't make much money. They make what I call 'barely enough to exist.' I'm doing something else, and I'll try to do teaching when I retire... if I still have the drive. Still though, the Canadian dollar is close to the US dollar, right? $50,000 is outstanding. I'm guessing things are cheaper up there too, since down here everybody has their hand in the pot.
