Is it illegal for a company to not pay you for start up training if you are not successful?

I am currently employed with an airline doing paid training for a month. To get the job I need to pass all of my exams & practical training, if not, no job. I've heard rumours within that if you aren't successful you don't get paid for the training. I don't want to go asking just yet. Is this legal? Are they allowed to do this?

  1. Depends on which country and state, and on what terms you were asked to do the training. You should have been given a copy of an employee handbook or agreement. Read it through, and if necessary, show it to a legal advisor.
