How does declaring English help stop illegal immigration?
English is the official language and pretty much everyone knows in order to make inroads and have a successful life in the USA you need to learn English. Does making a law for something everyone knows really do anything. This debate to me is about as frivolous as the reparations debate. Second learning English does not occur overnight it takes time to learn the language. First I am not Mexican, second their is not chip that is implanted that make people learn english once they get off the boat. Ask most Italians or Polish who live here and they will tell you that. All I am saying is we are wasting time debating something that is frivolous at best. Wasting time on this is taking away from solutions to fix the problem of ILLEGAL Immigration. Also inorder to become a citizen you need to take the exam in ENGRISH.

- I'm also confused as to why everytime I state that I teach English as a Second Language I get thumbs down. Am I not teaching immigrants the English language so that they do speak English? I'm confused I thought I was helping!
- Not EVERYONE knows english, otherwise it wouldn't be an issue. If immigrants want to live here, the least they can do is be respectful and learn the language. If I want to move to Brazil, I'm not going to do it without learning Portuguese first.
- I sort of think there are better things to do than to make silly laws. Like some real legislation, concerning real problems facing this country. For example Totally funding the Wall between US and Mexico. Secure that border TODAY.
- English is NOT the official language... we have no official language here! Also by forcing the speaking of an 'official' language we can dictate the expulsion of non-english speaking people. The whole goal of applying a national language is to widen the requirements of getting into the best nation on earth.
- I guess some think making English our official language will somehow make an illegal change his mind about coming? Its silly, I agree.....You can't change the inevitable.....Its a law of the universe, things will always change.....
- Wow "EDUCATED" is only educated on being hateful towards others! Yes, I agree, the language has nothing to do with illegal immigration.
- it doesn't. it just help create this myopic, reductionistic, eurocentric, xenophobic image of what an American is suppose to be like!!!!!!! and yes you are right.... according to linguists it takes about 7 years to acquire a language at an cognitive academic language proficiency.... and this is for an educated person..... image someone learning a language without knowing how to read and relying purely on sound!!!!!!! this is exactly why high schools offer Spanish, french, and language 1-8!!!!!!!
- Que dijo? No entiendo tu pregunta.
- because almost all illegals do not speak English for one, and for two-non English speaking children are bringing down standards of education, making it rougher on teachers to teach American children, making it harder for schools to get funding because their test scores are so low. most who immigrate here legally know some English!!!
- Actually, it takes 6 months of successful immerson to learn English! You may not be writing HARVED essays, but you will be able to speak and understand especially if your language already uses roman letters. ALSO, many people come here with no desire to learn English; they honestly just don’t care and know they can get by without it. Second, the need for an official language is unity. English is NOT the official language, it is the understood language. The reason every country needs an official language is because if there isn’t any, every time you call customer service it is going to take you 5 minutes just to pick a langage to talk to! (like Spanish is now) @_@ No, I am just kidding--it is unity. Language unifies! Hell, if I was from another country and it was significant, I would demand customer service be in Frenh, Chinese and so on. Do you see its significance? Also, if enough Hispanic people get their way, the citizen test will soon be in Spanish, what would you say then? Do you think it is right to travel to another part of this country and go to Subway and have your server be like “Huh?” while giving you a blank statre?!?
- Wait, wait, wait? Lazy... Mexican... Trash? Are you kidding me? You don't actually believe the garbage that comes out of your mouth do you? I am so sick of hearing you rascist pigs disguise your hatred with patriotism! There are legitimate reasons for Illegal Immigration reform and yours isn't one of them. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Now to the question.... Declaring English as the national language doesn't help stop illegal immigration. Just like sending more troops to Iraq doesn't stop terrorrism. It's a farce in my opinion. Why don't they just stop the deceit and call it what it is? "Get the Mexicans Out" It's sad that this has become a reality.
- Making English the official language will not deter illegal immigation, BUT, if English is the official language, no one will be able to force us to learn Spanish, get it?
- You are right, declaring English the official language doess nothing for illegal immigration. Remember, it's politicians here who talk that nonsense to make us think that they are "getting tough" on illegal immigration, when in fact, it does absolutely nothing! If politicians really wanted to do something about it, they would end the misinterpretation of the 14th amendment (which allows illegals to have babies who are US citizens), end all of the social services that illegals get, dosallow their childrens enrollment in our schools, end bilingual education (in all languages), build a longer fence than the 700 mile one proposed, and start deporting those who are here illegally (think it can't happen, remember "Operation Wetback?"). You get me someone who wants to do all that, then you got someone who is really "touch" on illegal immigration.
- Because if they make it a national language & law, they can stop spending all of the money on ballots, text books, road signs, etc. in other languages, stop having to provide translators at the polls and schools, and spend the money offering more ESL courses to help immigrants assimilate faster. And, if there were no languaage options, people would HAVE to learn English, instead of skirting around it. It would do nothing about the illegal alien problem, but it would help the legal immigrants and citizens.
- English was the language of business when America was the top industrial nation. Other country taught English so they could work with us. Now immigrants should learn English so they can do business in the USA and make money.
