What is the ultimate source of human happiness ?

Aristotle stated 'Happiness is the only pleasure we seek for its own sake'. Through all actions, tasks and daily routines; we are seeking happiness. It is the sole emotion which tops all others, and drives us in so many different ways to achieve it. Everyone has their own unique temporary solution to the problem of how to achieve happiness. Whether it's eating choclate or talking with a loved one. However true happiness must surely be from an internal source, rather than external factors. What is it you do to temporarily solve the problem of happiness? How do you manage your mind to achieve that state? MOST IMPORTANTLY; Is there a united way in which all humans seek happiness? Is there an ultimate source? Is there an ideal economic or social system, or way of living? Is the ultimate way to constantly develop? Do we develop not for the end result, as wants are infinite - but simply to feel content? Structure your answer, and take your time to solve the problem of human happiness.

  1. I don't really think there is an ultimate source of human happiness...unless you believe in God. Then God is I guess.
  2. I agree with Emerson: "nothing can make you happy but the triumph of your own principles"
  3. I personally subscribe somewhat to Denis Leary's idea that no one's happy, it comes in little bursts, but happiness comes from a few sources: Firstly, the smug satisfaction that you or your particular group of affiliation is better than the other guy/guys. This is huge, and it's never gonna stop no matter what we do. Secondly, we get physical satisfaction, in that there are things that make us feel physically good, be it sex, sport, an adequately scratched beard, whatever. Thirdly, material happiness, in that the new car, couch, house, or sum of money. I suppose this is related to Masellow's Hierarchy of needs, which makes sense, but perhaps that is too limited a definition of happiness. I think real happiness is something you have strive to maintain, more of a Journey as opposed to Destination sort of a thing.
  4. The ultimate source of human happiness is the experience of happiness itself. Everything has something different that makes them happy, therefore everyone has a different source for the happiness that they seek. However, it is the fact that they know happiness in whatever it is that they did to make them happy to begin with that leads them back to that original activity or idea. Therefore, happiness is only even sought because it is known. Its source depends on the individual, however its "Ultimate" source is itself.
  5. Learn to LOVE wat u do.
  6. There is a big difference between self indulgent happiness and true happiness. Self indulgent is self explanatory. But happy moments are the moments that make you stop and go hummm or awww like when they say stop and smell the roses kinda thing. Every so often I am compelled to stop!...... and watch, or stop!....... and smell, or stop!..... and hear something that moves me. That my insightful is what makes us happy. Those are the things that matter. And it's inturnally prooven. No book can tell you about the things that make you go humm.
  7. I would say many things in yourself have to change in order to achieve happiness: 1- materialistic desires have to be balanced or you will always want more. You do need them to live your life but you can live without them as well. 2- you achieve self-satisfaction with who you are and what you have. 3- pride of who you are and believe in your capability. Being a human you possess infinite potential to be who you want to be. 4-Possess selfless love- if you can love others and not expect anything in return, the only way to do this one is to actually believe that we are all sons from the one god and therefore we are brothers, makes us wanting to build a relationship without wanting anything in return. There are many other things, I just can't state everything, but these are the most important ones to me. Hope you find it useful.x
  8. personal creation. Anything that you personally create should bring happiness because it is the only thing exactly like it.
  9. Happiness differ from one person to another. It depends on the requirements that can simply answer they basic need at that particular time or event. It is very simple actually, to have an umbrella when it is raining, to chat or having a companion when you are lonely, to have food when you are hungry.to be loved or paid attention by someone when you are neglected. However this happiness may not provide eternal happy feeling. It is the art of giving and helping others that can make you truly happy. In addition giving yourself a sense of satisfaction and inner peace ,it also remind yourself how lucky and happy you are compared to others. well it is just my opinion and how i have been gaining happiness in my humble years as a homosapien
  10. The ultimate answer is that we are usually told to seek this happiness in some mystical union with the divine, or by divining some secret knowledge accessbile only after years and years of study and reflection. The simple answer is that all of this is a waste of time. The answer is that there is nothing really separating us from the animal kingdom except a slightly larger brain. There is no soul, no eternity, no divine. There is nothing that humans are "missing" by not searching in the correct manner. The answer is that nothing has any purpose or meaning at all. When humans truly accept this, they can attempt to find happiness within that context.
  11. Existence in this very moment I believe it was Thoreau who said "Blessed is the mortal who lives with no thought of the past" If we exist only in the present(and we do anyway) we are enabled to take charge of the universe.
  12. Well, I may not be educated enough to structure my sentence -but I `ll give my opinion. You can try to program your mind to positive things in life. Look, for the good.Happiness is fleeting, sometimes it`s only for an instant SEIZE it. LAUGH, RELISH it. Hold on to it when you have the moment.Don`t take things to seriously.LOVE brings happiness ie, family, friends, your cat. Your situation, station in life will not make you happy. You need to be content with what you have_take pride in it.If you live in a shack-make it the prettiest shack around.Try not to worry,"if there is nothing that you can do about it -don`t worry about it.Smile, talk to strangers.NEVER take yourself seriously or put too much pride in yourself.TOO much pressure Let it go. Laugh a lot, be with people, like this-it`s better to be alone than to have negative people around.LOVE yourself.
  13. Happiness is an agreeable feeling or condition arising from good fortune or propitious happening of any kind. It is the possession of those circumstances or that state of being which is attended with enjoyment. It is associated with good luck, good fortune, prosperity, well-being, delight, health, safety, and love. Happiness is generic, and is applied to almost every kind of enjoyment except that of the animal appetites. It ia a state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. These include: bliss, joy, joyous, carefree, jubilant, exultant, cheerful, playful, amused, fun, glad, gay, gleeful, jolly, jovial, delighted, euphoric, ecstatic, thrilled, elated, enraptured, comfortable, harmonious, and triumphant. Societies, religions, and individuals have various views on the nature of happiness and how to pursue it. Only saint-like persons, who feel that they are no longer interested in the external world, think that happiness is within. For many persons, nothing can make them happy. Our minds are as different as our finger prints - no two are alike. Listening to loud music makes one happy and makes another unhappy. Hence, there can be no single definition for happiness. It is probably impossible to objectively define happiness as humans know and understand it, as internal experiences are subjective by nature. Because of this, explaining happiness as experienced by one individual is as pointless as trying to define the color green such that a completely color blind person could understand the experience of seeing green. As a state and a subject, it has been pursued and commented on extensively throughout world history. "Call no man happy till he is dead." - Aeschylus "Happiness is a positive cash flow." - Fred Adler "Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose." - Joseph Addison "True happiness arises, in the first place, from the enjoyment of one's self, and in the next, from the friendship and conversation of a few select companions." - Joseph Addison Happiness is often associated with the presence of favourable circumstances such as a supportive family life, a loving marriage, and economic stability. Kali Yuga, the age of darkness, is the time when these favourables are difficult to find. Unfavorable circumstances - such as abusive relationships, accidents, loss of employment, and conflicts - diminish the amount of happiness a person experiences. In all nations, factors such as hunger, disease, crime, corruption, and warfare can decrease happiness. However, according to several ancient and modern thinkers, happiness is influenced by the attitude and perspective taken on such circumstances. From the observation that fish must become happy by swimming, and birds must become happy by flying. Aristotle points to the unique abilities of man as the route to happiness. Of all the animals only man can sit and contemplate reality. Of all the animals only man can develop social relations to the political level. Thus the contemplative life of a monk or professor, or the political life of a military commander or politician will be the happiest according to their own psyche. The following is the self-reported positive affect (i.e. positive emotion) during the day by 909 employed women in USA: Activities and their positive effect index: Intimate relations 5.10 Socializing 4.59 Relaxing 4.42 Pray/Worship/Meditate 4.35 Eating 4.34 Exercising 4.31 Watching TV 4.19 Shopping 3.95 Preparing food 3.93 On the phone 3.92 Napping 3.87 Taking care of my children 3.86 Computer/Email/ Internet 3.81 Housework 3.73 Working 3.62 Commuting 3.45 Interaction with partners: w/ friends 4.36 w/ relatives 4.17 w/ spouse/Significant other 4.11 w/ children 4.04 w/ clients/customers 3.79 w/ co-workers 3.76 w/ boss 3.52 alone 3.41 Further, happiness is not entirely psychological in nature - it has got a biological basis too. The neurotransmitter dopamine is involved in desire and seems often related to pleasure. Pleasure can be induced artificially with drugs. Use of drugs is not some thing new, it has been used by many including Sanyasis since millenia.
