Why is it so hard to motivate oneself to lose weight?

I read this article in Men's Health which had 10 tips to motivate yourself to lose weight. All of the tips basically had to do with pushing yourself to exercise by looking at a picture when you were skinny or buying a pair of jeans that are 2 sizes too small. In my opinion, those are just band-aids that never work long-term. The reason I gained weight was because I ate poorly, had no time to sleep much less workout (because I was in school) and I was constantly stressed. I think in order to really lose weight, you have to have a "Come to Jesus" moment where you finally decide: THIS IS IT! After I started working, I finally had the free time and the money to eat better (instead of the dollar menu). This gave more rest and a healthier diet. I gradually started building up my flexibility and strength by doing yoga. Then, I added weight-lifting to build my strength even more. I started light and didn't push myself or beat myself up for not being in shape. I now have the strength and energy to do more intense exercise. I'm getting stronger and more fit by doing it gradually. But none of it would've been possible until I had some balance in my life and I decided to make a lifestyle change - not a quick fix.

  1. It's different for everybody. But yeah I think there really is a "this is it!" moment. A friend of mine said her moment was when her little girl said: "mommy I cant put my arms around you anymore!" Starting out easy and adding more and more is always the best way to do it. Gotta crawl before you walk right?
  2. Wow I'm inspired. It's very hard to motivate oneself to lose weight because to some it may seem like achieving the impossible.
  3. food is so damn good! yum. but is feeling comfortable, secure, and good bout your self more important...yep
  4. Im not sure, it is just how someone is, i use to be in football and i had conditioning everyday developing this huge appetite, after i got out of high school and quit football i still had the appetite but i wasnt doing anything to get rid of the calories which made me sort of chubby now. Thanks
  5. I've been one of those people that were chubby all my life. I tried every diet plan that came along. A couple months ago I saw a friend of mine that I han't seen in over six months. She had lost over 40 lbs and looked amazing. I started following her plan and I've dropped 17 lbs in 3 weeks. You can read about her plan at http://ow.ly/1rJJc.
