How do some photographers on Flickr get so successful?
How do some of the photographers on Flickr get so successful or well-known? With some,i fully understand why because their work is pure quality, but some people are no different to unknown photographers, yet still get all the credit and recognition. Why/how is this? What have these 'successful' people done to get so well-known?

- Perhaps because they publicize well and are really focused on their work..? And also many photographers might have lots of pics on Flickr of many different genres, that interests different kinds of people...once you get popular on it people will like everything you capture...=P well thats what i think cuz im not on flickr
- I don't think anyone knows. Maybe professionals go through the website each day looking for some big new star. Honestly, situations like that just don't just happen with photography. look at people on youtube. You have people on there that can sing way better than Justin Bieber (no offense) and yet he still gets all the fame and money. I think it' just pure luck.
- I think its luck, too. All the really popular photographers I have seen on flickr take some really good photos like holly.skye and yyellowbird. I think I'm sort of average on flickr, I guess. But no where near as popular as them. Sometimes its better just to take pictures and post them on flickr for the love of photography, and not the views [:
- Hi Nicki, The key with sites like Flickr is to be active in commenting on other people's images, join the relevant Groups for your photos, and to upload a constant stream of new images. The more you comment the better known you will become and you will soon have a following. To ensure other Flickr users can find your photos add them to Groups, for example if you have a good photo of the Tower of London there will be a group for that landmark you can join and add it to, and numerous London Groups you could join also. Then like-minded people will see your work and leave you a comment, and you can take a look at their photos and comment on them too. If you really like someone's style of photography take a look at their Profile and contacts, chances are they will have contacts that you would also be interested in. Those who are really well know could easily have been showcasing their work on Flickr for years, or already have a following from their own websites. Good luck Lucy www.lucyhillphotography.com
- do i smell jealousy... people can take poor photos but have great advice... others are just well known in the photographic communities... kind of like other artists... picasso sucks as a painter, but some people think he is a master... what you think sucks, others might not... beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
- Part of it is how hard the photographer is willing to work in order to get his or her photographs seen by as many people as possible. There are many other photography websites on the internet. What do you mean by credit and recognition? There are many REAL photographers who get their work picked up by Getty Images, a company who provides stock images for their clients, (even news agencies). Panoramio is another agency who is deeply involved in the internet in partnership with Google. I don't know of anyone on Flick'r who's just an average photographer who gets a lot of credit and recognition. Usually they've earned such recognition through the quality of their images. A LOT of people that use Flickr praise photographs that are only slightly better than an average snapshot. Let me ask you... would you rather get e-mail or a comment that praises your work from someone like Scott Kelby, or praise from the average user of Flickr? I would pick the former! - Because flickr is a false assesment of ones true ablility. Most on flickr don't really know much about photography, but people always follow the majority. Shoot fashionable stuff and prepare to whore yourself out to those post one award x groups and you'll be on your way to flickr stardom. Of course if you want to maintain the moral high ground you'll never get majorly recognised, some of the best photographers I know are not on flicker, and the best photographers on flickr often keep a low profile.
