What are the steps to being a successful fly fisherman?
What are the steps one should take to ensure a successful fly fishing trip? I am planning on heading out for my first fly fishing trip. I would like to know the steps I should follow in order to ensure an enjoyable/ successful trip. From start to finish please. IE: 1. gathering fishing accessories 2. tuning gear... etc.. I hope you get the idea. The more detailed the better. I want to ensure I have a good time. I am bringing my best friend with me. Thanks in advance.

- Depending on what species you're pursueing and the type of water you'll be fishing, you should have one "main" outfit and one back-up Always bring a 2nd set of chest waders in case your primary ones spring a leak Gear: I generally make a checklist of things such as: tippet, leaders, weights, indicators, floatants, Clippers, foreceps, insect repellent, flashlight, flyboxes and all other sundry items. I then pack them in a small box and check them off the list once they are packed. Use the internet and research the waters you'll be fishing.....a few clicks of the mouse can get great info such as water conditions, what hatches are out, what patterns you'll need and where to fish. That should help you get started
- Fly fishing is a wonderful sport, but can be very frustrating when you first start. You won't need to have every piece of equipment under the sun when you venture out, you can go with just the basics ie. a rod, reel, flyline, leaders (nlyon etc.), a net and a small selection of flies. This is the beauty of fly fishing, you can travel really light if needed. A good investment would be a fly vest. These come with many pockets and are useful when you start adding "fishing accessories" to your collection ie. spare line, fly floatant, line sink, extra fly boxes, priest, scissors, clippers, indicators, different strength leaders etc. Also, If you have access to a strip of grass somewhere ie. back garden, the I would practice your casting as often as you can. Cast with a little strip of cloth tied to the end of the leader instead of a fly. Stick a dinner plate on the grass ahead of you about 15m (or whatever you feel comfortable with) and try to land your fly (cloth) on or near the plate. This will greatly improve you accuracy when casting. Good luck :)
