- I think you answered your own question. The Germanic success during the process of Roman disintegration was to acquire land and establish their own rule i.e. independent kingdoms, on formerly Roman territory. For example Geiseric established his Vandal kingdom in once-Roman North Africa, while Euric founded an independent Visigoth kingdom in western Europe c 474.They were able to do this because the western Roman Empire was, all too often, unable to stop them. Its weakness stemmed from lack of sufficient military strength, and the crux of that problem was a general loss of backing from its own citizens. In other words, the Germanic peoples succeded because their opponent was fatally weakened. This has often been blamed on loss of North African revenue c 439 but that was more of an effect of weakness than a cause. Had Rome enjoyed more support i.e. had its own people been willing to fight, the Vandals wouldn't have taken the rich African areas in the first place.
