  3. It depends on what kind of "cow farming" you are talking about, and what you would consider to be "successful." In a beef cow-calf operation in the USA, it is generally understood that you need a herd of 30 brood cows in order to break even on costs if you already own the land. If each cow produces a calf every year and you can sell that calf for $500, that would be a gross income of $15,000. You might be able to survive if you had a herd of 100 cows, but it would not be easy. Most small operators have family members who work for free on the farm, and at least one person has an outside job. The land is a problem, however. You will need 3-4 good acres per cow in most of the country; more in some areas, less in others. It will need to be fenced and set up for intensive grazing and possibly irrigation if you are going to get the most out of it. If you are fortunate enough to have inherited a few thousand acres of good land, you could certainly survive on it and make a decent income. A confinement dairy operation requires less land, but is brutally hard work and the deck is stacked against you due to government subsidization of large corporations.
