  1. 1. there are different versions of 'spllover theory' in terms of this issue: . http://www.ssc.wisc.edu/cde/cdewp/99-03.pdf the abstract preceding this article neatly summarises it as having the four dimensions centreing around : -positive and negtive spillovers from -work to family and from -family to work. -then goes on to detail the researh into these four dimensions of the issue and the results of this research. 2. However, it's important too, to point out that: this theory tends to be a lmited approach in terms of other sociological perspectives as it focuses o the immediate aspects of the situation rather than drawing on what Mills calls 'The Sociolgical Imagination' That is, it doesn't set this issue of work life balance within -the broader structures of inequality like class and gender - the historical development of these wider aspects of the the issue --the current processes of change in these wider sets of social relationships and their impact on the issue of work family balance 3 Thus it could be interpreted as coming from a Functioanlist approach which - provides useful research into the immediate details of any issue - assesses the issue in terms of the immediate problems it poses - and - attempts to get to grips with it as a problem by describing it in these limted terms rather than analysing it as an aspect of the broader processes. 4 in contrast http://jfs.e-contentmanagement.com/archives/vol/15/issue/2/article/2961/worklife-balance this study from HILDA (Household , Income and Labour Dynamics Australia) research institute situates the 'spillover effect in a broader perspective. again if you read the abstract in this web site you will get a good idea of the -key concepts -focus -and research questions .... used in this version of 'spill over theory' 5 So its important to check the material you've received from your course to decide which form of 'spill over theory' you need to describe.
