How to have a good work/life balance in a Sales job involving travel?
Hi, My partner is considering a Sales job where travel (2-3 times a week) is required to visit clients. The company offers no benefits and he might work 40h a week. I am slightly concerned because this might be exhausting and affect our quality time. He is going for an interview on Friday. He will have to drive to visit clients in the UK (I don't know why he could not simply fly or get a train ticket to go to London for example!. The office is in Newcastle). I am also concerned because he's been unemployed before and I am not sure whether he is ready for this perm job. I would appreciate if some Sales people could give me some advice on how to keep a perm job in Sales without damaging the work/life balance? Many thanks. PS: I also wonder how working hours are counted when you travel and if the laptop, iPhone and company car can be used for private purposes? S

- Hi, That seems to be an outstanding job offer, especially if it is commissioned sales. I have a little experience with being self employed as well as working contractual for companies. When a company car and equipment are provided, the company will normally state if it can be used for personal use as well. I would have your partner get the specifics on the contracting use of vehicles. Especially if there is confidential data on the laptop. Travel time is normally considered on the clock time. Such things as cell phones, etc, possibly can be used for personal as well as business. But in order to make it easy on yourself. Business property should not be mixed with personal property. If the company is paying for the equipment, then keep it separate at all times. When working for the job, especially since he has been unemployed. Let him make that his priority in order to make a good impression. Because with out a job, there can not be a fulfilling life. Good luck, hope I was able to help.
