What is the key to starting your own business?

Everyone says the real way to make money is have your own business...not to be an employee of a company. What is the key to starting your own business and being successful?

The key is actually many keys: Have a good plan for a business that is needed or fills a vacuum in the area you are setting up shop. Have the funds to start the business and run it for at least 6 months even if no money is coming in. Have the strength of body to suffer through many weeks where you are working 70 or more hours to keep things going. Get a good CPA (accountant), lawyer, and after you start to grow your business, hire a payroll department to run your employees payrolls and benefits so you don't have to.
Being self-employed is not for everyone. Plenty of people make good money working for others. To have a successful business that also fufills you, you should find something you like doing and figure out a way to make a living out of doing it (i.e. if you like cooking, start a personal chef business). Your business should make you excited about getting out of bed in the morning and looking forward to the day. Owning a business is hard work, grueling, and stressful... so you have to really love what you're doing. To me, passion is the key. Good luck.
