Will I be successful in teaching with a minor criminal record?

I am a teaching assistant in a primary school and have applied to do a PGCE and a GTP next academic year. I love my job and believe that I am a strong candidate and will go on to become an effective teacher. However, unfortunately I have: 1 reprimand (graffiti) 1 conditional discharge (graffitii and 1 joint of cannabis) I regret the stupid things I did when I was 17 - 19 yrs old. Do I have a future in education and working with children and young people?

  1. I doubt that will get in your way. Your older now, plus those two offenses have nothing to do with children. If your offense was in a sexual manor, then you might really have some concern. I think you'll be fine :) Just try to do a lot of community service and things that will look good so yit will even it out.
  2. In the U.K, if you have got a criminal record, even if it was something you did when you were younger, no, you can't become a teacher. I'm not sure about anywhere else but that is what it is like in the U.K. I hope this helps :)
  3. Ignore Lau.. you must have had a CRB check to get a job as a TA, the one for teaching is just the same. You will have to be up front about the issue when you apply and possibly have to convince an interview panel that you have learned something from your earlier experience, there are quite a few teachers with minor indescretions in their teens.
