How successful is varicocele surgery for solving infertility?

My Husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for a year and a half. Recently we find out he has a varicocele. We got some mix answers about the surgery success, but must of it we heard that it wouldn't matter for the first year after surgery couples will have the same luck getting pregnant as the people that didn't chose to have surgery. I heard is more successful for the second year. Is it true? What options do we have?
