How to start a successful stud farm?
My dream is to become a stud farm owner for Arabians. I'm wondering if anyone had any advice on how to do this? Thanks : )

- You need to get in contact with "Mr. Las Vegas" himself, Wayne Newton.. He has some of the most renown bloodlines in the Arabian world, mainly the Aramus line....... http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2003/apr/23/waynes-other-world-world-renowned-arabian-horses-r/ ** a nice video of Mr Newton's horses and ranch, hosted by an "Aussie"......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-CwacEcGhs ....Billy Ray "Meikyo"

- In today's economy you will not make it....unless it is a tax write off. That would mean you are already a multi millionaire and can afford to lose thousands upon thousands of dollars. The entire horse industry is at an all time low. Many farms are downsizing or going out of Business altogether. If you were to read the professional horse trade magazines you would be aware of this. Stud fees have dropped and so have the number of mares to be bred. But if you still decide to press forward...You need to buy from a proven Bloodline, expect to pay anywhere from $2,000.00 to $30,000.00 for a Stallion. (remember if you buy cheaper, you get lower Stud Fees $$ ) You will need your own small farm with all the necessary buildings & fencing & employees. ( you cannot breed safely with out about 4 people during the cover, 2 for the Stud & 2 for the mare. Also up keep in general around the property & barns & stalls, if your farm is dirty & unappealing you will have few mare owners wanting to use your facilities..they will shop elsewhere ) You will need all the legal things such as insurance and licenses. Start up expenses alone will crush you. What you need to do is to get work on a breeding farm & get a feel for all that is involved. Nothing like hands on experience...also subscribe the the Arabian Magazines to learn as much as possible about the industry...good luck....I'm a fellow horse lover, I manage a small ranch in New Mexico USA
- 1) Get a really, really high paying job or marry a millionaire. This is not a money making business, especially in this economy. 2) Make sure your area can support a stud farm. If there aren't a lot of arabians, you probably won't have much business 3) Buy a nice farm with enough space for what you would need, and safe, well maintained facillities 4) Start with one really nice stud with stellar bloodlines, perfect conformation, and an incredible show record. No crappy horses. We don't need more crappy horses in this world with not enough homes for good horses 5) Take care of any insurance/legal stuff you need to. Draw up a contract for mare owners. 6) Advertise. Website, flyers, ads in horse magazines 7) Mares. Once again, only good mares. Don't breed to crappy mares. You will only feed the horrible backyard breeders.
