  1. What has changed once you become certified. You will keep on doing the same job you have being doing. I know a friend of mine who was certified, had a family, full time job and still decided to go back to school to get a bachelor's degree (parttime which meant she was going to school after work) and still managed to be the best mother and wife she could be. It was all about time planning.
  2. Work life balance is going to be a challenge as a CPA. I should know, I used to be one (no longer practicing, earning continuing education credits or paying dues, so technically I'm not a CPA any more). As you have found out, being a CPA has very pronounce busy seasons. You are going to have some all-nighters. You are going to work very long hours then and it is going to suck. However, you also will have light seasons (e.g. summer) that are filled with a lighter load. The best methods of trying to manage the work/life balance are: 1. If your company allows, bank your overtime to go toward time-off in lieu. This is a fantastic perk when available to have long vacations that nobody (except teachers) get to have. 2. Make sure your waking hours are super efficient. Leave extra early in the morning so you shave off some commute time. Go ahead and buy the pre-packaged salads, take-away food and other convenience items as this is the time you need them. Cook extra large meals so you have leftovers so you are not cooking every single night. Take advantage of concierge services that can do your running around. 3. Keep going to the gym. By being in shape, you create more energy and calm your mind. You'll have the strength to handle the long hours, will need less sleep and can use the time to think and have some "me" time. 4. Make sure your working hours are fun/productive. Make sure you take a break every two hours or so to go goof around with your co-workers. By concentrating the work day into heavy duty work hours with some preplanned work times (as opposed to people who blabber during the course of the day and stretch out the workday). 5. Rely on your significant other to pick up the slack. That can really help when you need some help.
