How or where to find marriage /divorce records?

I am trying to figure out how to get marriage/ divorce records on someone. When I internet search, all the domains that come up promise these records but with a hefty price tag. As these are public records, they should be free? or at least of a minimal cost to procure. How and where do I go to get such records? from a legitimate site?

3. It depends on what state you were married/divorced in. Try googling those records and putting in the state as well. State government sites are the cheapest way to obtain those records.
