What are the characteristics & traits of a bea-tzu? How are they with kids, are they easy to train & groom?
My wife & I are considering adopting a bea-tzu from one of the local rescue kennels, but we know absolutely nothing about this breed & haven't been real successful in finding anything on the web about them either. Any feedback would be helpful in letting us know what to expect. Thanks!

- it's not a breed, it's a mix dog, and with mixed dogs you can't determine their temperament because they can take on one or the other, even with purebred dogs, temperament listed on sites are not always accurate. corgis are suppose to nip, none of my 6 nip suprise. You should ask the shelter about the dog's temperament instead of the ppl here, the ppl at the shelter are suppose to do temperament testing before placing the dog into a new home.
- it's MUTT not a breed. a beagle/shih tzu mix. research BOTH breeds to get an idea of what this mix will be like. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/shihtzu.htm http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/beagle.htm http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/beatzu.htm
- As a beatzu is a mutt (not a real breed... thus the reason you couldnt find any info) you can never really determine what their characteristics are. All you can expect is that they will either be like a beagle a shihtzu or a mix of both. But then again they might not be. There is no guarantee with mutts.
- I've never heard of it, but from the letters in it's name it's sounds like a beagle/shih-tzu mix. Yikes. I haven't had very good experiences with either breed so I think I might consider finding another dog.
- Never heard of that breed. If it is a Beagle & Shih Tzu mix, you should check the characteristis of both breeds. WIth a mixed breed, it's difficult to guess what traits will surface.
- There is no breed standard because it's a cross; and quite frankly one of the stupider ones. Many have the same skin problems as Beagles and/or eye problems like Shih-Tzus. I'd advise having the groomer take a look at *your* dog and suggest what it needs; Beagle need relatively little grooming, Shih-Tzus need a *lot* (especially to keep hair out of their eyes). Both breeds tend to be easy going as far as training goes, but some families of Shih-Tzus are nippy.
- Well, since a bea tzu is a mix of 2 breeds it's hard to say what he's going to be like. Unfortunately with these "designer" dogs thera are no standards so you can get anything.
- Its a mixed breed dog, its hard to say what it would be like. Genetics are a crap-shoot, and with mixes, you never know what traits the dog will take on. Im going to assume that its a beagle shih-tzu mix. Read up on beagles, and read up on Shih-tzus.. that dog could take on traits of either breed, or it may be a complete mix of both. Beagles and Shih Tzus are both ussually good with kids if properly socialized around them. From my experience in a groom shop, Shih Tzus are ussually pretty easy going.. most of them were very easy to groom.
- Honey, they are mutts so they are a mix of genes and likely not terribly great ones at that so there is no way anyone can know what the 'characteristics and traits' would be. Look up mutts maybe? I am not saying they will be bad dogs, that will be dependent upon if their parents were homozygous with good characteristics of temperament and health and structure. Even then, when you mix two different breeds of such different types, it is a crap shoot as to how the genes will fall. Beagles are square dogs with sufficient leg under them, balanced head/muzzle, very houndy and a bit hard headed, short coat; Shitzu's are low, long dogs with short legs and a smushed face and long coat - they both have some common and some different health and temperament characteristics = mix all that up and cast it onto the floor and that is what you get, a complete mix of stuff with no consistency in anything. If anyone tells you that you can 'know what to expect' in any aspect, they are lying.
- Is this another weird cross that some BYB invented? Is that beagle and shitz tzu? Always amazes me what they'll come up with next. They need to start crossing bulldogs with shitz tzus and then they can sell what they're already selling - bullshitz. Please understand that the dog you are considering adopting is not a breed, but it is a designer dog. If it is at a rescue, chances are it is one of the many mutts that the owner paid a BYB too much for and then found out that the dog wasn't going to be the cute little thing that they thought it was going to be. Off to the shelter it goes. It's frustrating and sad to see people continually breeding these dogs to make some money and fill the current pet trend. They crossbreed two unrelated breeds and overprice the puppies and try to pass these dogs off as an actual "breed" to the unsuspecting buyer. Talk to the shelter about the dog's history and what veterinary workup has been done on the dog since it entered the shelter. I do applaud you for rescuing him, but you may want to do some research on both the beagle and the shitz tzu before you decide. The dog may have traits of both breeds, and you want to educate yourself before you bring the dog home, or you may end up returning it to the shelter.
- Another one.... A "bea-tzu" is NOT a breed, its a mutt, therefore you cant find information on it and we cant predict temperment. Try reserching both breeds, but keep in mind its a mutt and you cant predict with mutts, usually. Dont get me wrong, mutts are great dogs, but they arent breeds and are somewhat unprodictable.
- They are not a breed, they are a mutt. Like any mutt, you take your chances on all aspects of the dog's appearance and personality. It could take after a beagle, it could take after a Shih Tzu, it could combine the traits of both breeds, it could take after neither breed. And if it's a rescue, you don't even know for sure that's the 2 breeds the dog is! It could just be the best guess of the rescue workers. I suggest you bring the family to visit the dog and make sure everyone gets along. As for training and grooming, you'll just have to hope for the best.
- Your dog will have characteristics of both breed...It not a pure breed dog it a mix so it's hard to say how this dog will look both breeds require daily brushing the Bichon get groomed about every 6 weeks...I would go to www.toybreeds.com they may have more information you are looking for..Also google bichon frise club of America and American shih-tzu club hope this helps.
- You didn't find anything about this 'breed' on the web because it's a mixed breed dog. I'm guessing the dog is a beagle/shih tzu mix, and there are no standards for mixed breeds. Your best bet is to look up the traits, charachteristics, and overall general facts on both the beagle and the shih tzu.
- Good for you for adopting from a rescue. As far as the breeds go, I like them both, but they're both very different. The beagles I've run across can be escape artists and some people aren't crazy about their barking/baying--but the shih tzu part may cancel that out. They are generally pretty active and always have their noses working. I have a beagle mix (don't know what he's mixed with) and he's a real sweetheart--very cuddly and loyal. The shih tzu's I've come across have all been great companion dogs. I've done work in shelters and veterinary clinics and I can only think of one that I came across that was sort of nippy. And he was at the vet, so he was probably stressed out--not a big deal. Both dogs are small in size. It's really an interesting combination--I hope you post pictures if you decide to adopt this dog. Good luck.
